I don't know how it did it, but after opening the Dungeon Oddessy demo, I alt-tabbed out of it to continue chatting on the #se4 IRC channel on gamesnet. Well... DO didn't like being placed in the background, and so retaliated by eating my start menu.
It also placed an annoying bar hovering over everything in the bottom left corner above the task bar. Perhaps that is where DO's mouth was located. Suffice it to say, I have mixed feelings about the demo, before even playing it.
