Yeah, I haven't used them since 1.49 either. But they work as you say anywhere on the combat map. Only once in dozens of fireings did it move a ship closer than it was. That ship did a lot of damage before that next turn.

Always put a replusor on after the wormhole beam. If somethig gets warped to point blank range, at least it gets thrown a distance away
