Losing "surrounded" provinces

Ok, I just lost a province that was "surrounded" by provinces I owned. I still owned all of the surrounding provinces, but somehow 20 Ulm Infantry and Archers just passed thru my other provinces and took the undefended one. How can you get an army like that "thru" defended provinces?

It might be a bug in the map. Check out neighbours with the appropriate map filter.

It could also be a flying army (flying carpets).

Finally it might have been a teleporting army. Several high level spells allows a mage to bring an army with him.
