Fomoria Flavor Question

So of the nations not in the manual:

Hinnom, Ashdod, Gath are based on the Old Testament. Lanka is sort of an evil-Kailasa, based on Indian legends. Tir nan Og is Irish mythology, and Eriu is Ireland to Man's England. But what legends form the basis for Fomoria? I haven't read anything about a race of giants cursed with animal heads and afflictions. Where does that come from?
