Question about the battle replay bug
In this thread here
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin...4;t=001494;p=4
smart folks mentioned some compiler trick to help against the battle replay bug; I'm afraid I don't understand technical computer stuff and dont even know what a compiler is.
I notice this bug a lot and it drives me crazy, especially in MP, especially across different systems (me = windows idiot, them = linux smarties).
I have no idea how effective any of my troops and spells are and can't trust a single scout.
Can someone tell me in *layman's terms* if there is anything I can do to help the battle replay bug? I play on Windows 98 SE and Windows 2000.
Thanks very much.

Re: Question about the battle replay bug
In layman's terms, the best way to avoid the battle replay bug is to use the same operating system as your host. This way, your battle replays will be accurate.
If you use a different OS, your battle replays will be inaccurate due to issues with compilation.
It's like how two electronic translators can generate two different outputs given the same input to translate.
Further details require Technomancy level 6 to understand. If you don't understand what any of it means, you can research Technomancy yourself, or just accept the above explanation.

Re: Question about the battle replay bug
The short Version: No, there is nothing at present you can do about the battle replay bug, if you play with a different operating system from your host: Windows boxen can only play with other Windows boxen as hosts, and non-Windoze boxen(Mac/Linux/Solaris/etc) can only play with non-Windoze boxen as hosts. Otherwise, the battle replay bug will manifest. Nothing you can do will fix this.

Re: Question about the battle replay bug
Thanks.
Cannot research that. Research capacities currently full with Epistemology and Ethics (level 8 and 5 resp.). Technomancy must stay at level 0.
Re-Question: Is there nothing I can do but ask my host to host in Windows? That is the only thing I can do?
Re-Question2: Is this something that can or could be fixed in an upcoming patch?

Your solutions are either cast "Install Linux", which is Technomancy 3, or ask your host to host in Windows. Alternatively, you can suffer. Doing nothing and simply coping with the problem doesn't require any effort at all, as long as you accept that battle replays will bear absolutely no relationship to the actual outcome when magic which requires magic resistance checks is involved.

The potentially exact cause of this bug is now known to Illwinter, so it's possible that it could be fixed in the upcoming patch. Whether it actually WILL be or not, is something that will only be known when the patch actually comes out.

Re: Question about the battle replay bug
The only other potential solution I can think of would be to hire an independent technomancer, and have him cast "Hack Code", but this would require that you research up to technomancy 7 and empower or give him items that raise his Assembly skill to at least 5. You might have to ally with a nation that has researched technomancy 7 to get this done, if you yourself cannot afford to research technomancy.
