Default Has anyone tried Reach for the Stars?

If you have, would you prefer the SEIV or Reach for the Stars' combat system?

Personally I would like to play as the "grand admiral" without paying too much attention to the details. (In RFTS, your fleet and the enemy fleet line up opposite to each other and you can see missile, beam cannon, defense drones and other weapons being fired in Groups, and you can adjust combat distance to take advantage of your superior range weaponry or pointblank hitters... basicly, you have to anticipate enemy's formation and select a counter formation and range to deal with the enemy.)
It saves lots of time and fun to watch at the same time.

Yes, and two words: Dogs Frizbie. Nuff said.

(That sucked horribly. Sorry, but that is my honest opinion.)

Icevic,
Got a copy before SE4 and found it ok. Had a number of interesting games. Havent played it since I got SE4 though. I'm pretty happy with SE4's combat system as is....

Yes, I would have to agree with him aswell. I only tried the Demo Version of RFTS. Although the graphics where interesting, and the interface quite colorful, I still think SE4 does a better job overall then RFTS's tac system. Yes, RFTS has some additonal features that SE4 doesn't have, but with SE4's customability offered compared to RFTS's I still think SE4 is the way to go.

Was thinking of buying it but I couldn't get the demo to work for more than a few minutes at a time.

From the small amount I saw of the technology research and ship building it was very simple and without the options in SE4.

I liked the concept of the combat resolution (but didn't get to play it enough to come to a final conclusion), in that it wasn't super detailed but did provide more imput than full out strategic resolution.

Personnaly I never play tactical resolution in SE4, in my opinion when you get to mid game and end game there are far too many battles going on to bother resolving them in detail. But something with RFTS simpliicity might be workable late in a game of SE4.

I bought RftS a couple months before I'd even heard of SE4. RftS is simpler and less customizable than SE4, but it does have an editor in the full Version that can customize the races, tech trees, and scenarios. I haven't kept up with the patches to RftS, but I've heard that the second campaign game that was added later was quite buggy.

Since buying SE IV, I've played it quite a bit more than RftS, but I do still go back to RftS sometimes for a change of pace. As far as the combat systems go, I'd personally rate SE IV Tactical first, RftS second, and SE IV Strategic third.
