Melee.
On mine Infantry Section are not able to do Melee.
Can do Melee - Special Forces, irregular, guerrillas.
Why irregular armies fight is better, than usual infantry ?
In Afgan War soldiers of motor-shooting armies were able to fight with Modjahed (Irregular) in Melee, including using sapper a shovel, a helmet, butts of the weapon, magazine weapon and other.

Re: Melee.
Well that's interesting. I just tossed five american regular infantry squads into 5 regular Russian infantry squads and provoked 2 melees and I got two melees out of five on the next try and one out of five on the try after that. All "elite" unit classes get a slight melee bonus as do UC 75 and UC 79 and "Russia" as a nation gets a slightly higher chance to initiate a melee in the code so I don't see a problem. "Regular" troops WILL engage in melee but the SF etc are trained to do so and that's why they and some of the irregular troop UC's get the bonus as well simply becasue they are more willing to engage in close quarter fighting and we have two "irrregular" type unit classes that reflect that.
So.... regular troops CAN " do melee", just not quite as well.
I assume ( but you don't specify ) that you were fighing the "Mujahadeen" OOB . In that OOB, the "Tribal group" units are UC "Ranger" so they get the full melee bonus. The ones named "Guerilla Group" do not get the same bonus but the "Taliban Band" do as well. The thing to remember with Melee is the troops that are better at it benifit more from the melee bonus when the enemy advances into their hex the effect is not as pronounced when it's the other way around and both sides are "ready". Toss "pinned" and "retreating" or "Routed" in the mix and things change more in favour of the side that isn't "pinned" "retreating" or "Routed" .

Re: Melee.
Bear in mind even many situations of very intimate CQB don't result in meelees, so 2 out of 5 would be OK IMO.

Re: Melee.
Experience, morale, how much surpression each side has taken etc etc all figure into the equation. In the test I ran both sides were "ready".
