edit: Did the AI ship run away or approach? If it approached to the adjacent square, it did ram you. This is a common strategy used on some of the better AI's (like in the TDM Modpack) for ships without offensive weapons (like colonizers).

Hmm, that would have to be it then. It did charge me instead of running away. However, I actually did consider the possibility that it rammed me but I felt it should have been more heavily damaged than it was after a ram. But I suppose that crystal armour was the difference.

Crystal Armour? Then it was the Tessellate! I have used the same approach that Rollo used with the United Flora (well, except the UF is vulnerable to ID attacks because their ramming ships had not shields).
