Default bugs?

i love this game, generally, but i have a couple of minor issues to address.

first, the (almost certainly) ubggy bits:

1) whilst playing Last night, i had a trade & research partner suddenly decide it would be fun to go to war with me - and my research dropped to under half of my intial research level! thsi is the level *before* i allied with them, i'm talking about! :P

2) i've found it almost always works out that i make alliances more easily with the supposedly bloodthirsty warrior races than the supposedly serene/friendly peacful ones. the latter often are intractable, and seem to be at war with *everyone* on the relatiion grid. it's like the roles are working backward.

right, now for the 'issues' part:

1) is it just me, or does it seem to anyone else entirely unreasonable that a huge gas giant, with a breathable atmosphere, should have a *maximum* population of 500m, and 5 facilities, while the medium rock planet in vaccuum next door can support 8000m/25?

2) why is it not possible to see at least approximately how large a given colony will *before* settling it? i know i'd rather invest my colony ship in an 8000m/25 planet than a 500m/5 one, given a choice.
