I think not, and it shouldn't anyway, IMHO.
Better kill him off fast and have your priest call him back - you'll only loose some magic, but dying from disease will get him 2..4 additional afflictions most of which will not vanish by themselves.
Or even better - keep him alive and have him healed(GoH, Chalice, Fairy Queen).

As for AI the most effective work around to this problem so far is to simply use an American instead, they tend to put up a bit more of a fight than your average Artificial Idiot.
