Re: OT thoughts about punishment for the BLaster dude
If the guy has any brains, he will co-operate with government and get few years sentence of "Do not touch computers" after which he will go into some company for IT security job or work for government to catch other crackers.

Re: OT thoughts about punishment for the BLaster dude
I doubt they will do much to bim, especially if he only had a minor part in it. What I dont get is people dont seem to care about "other people" properity. I would never F with my buddies computer, because I wouldnt want anyone to come around messing with mine. Must be the old fashion value's again *sigh*

Re: OT thoughts about punishment for the BLaster dude
This kids problem is that he isn't likely to have anything to offer the government. He's not any kind of skilled hacker, all he did was change a already present virus so that the filename was, instead of MSBLast, an 'anatomical reference'. Then another varianbt where it chagned the filename to his own dang handle. Not too bright...
In all likelyhood the computers that got infected by his variant would have been infected by the original MSBLast anyway.
Really he made a few real, real stupid mistakes. That's all.
Still, we can't let people think they can get away with this kind of nonsense. So burn him. He's a witch.

Re: OT thoughts about punishment for the BLaster dude
I think he should be forced to code for MS for a few years.
That will dumb him down a bit.
How about MS stand up and take the hit on this and all their other 'security holes'

I think people care. It's just that the BLaster worm (which I did detect on my computer) and viruses in general are a pretty minor annoyance when compared to all the spammers (exercising their 'right to advertise their company') and companies who F with my computer.

Re: OT thoughts about punishment for the BLaster dude
i have been thinking about spam.
It is a legit business and people do use it.
What i think is that people need to learn how to use filters properly.
I have filters set up on my email properly now and now I am getting only 1 email every few days. So I update the filter.
Spam works as it makes money for those involved. If it did not then it would not happen.
It is an offset to the internet as it should be. I still despise the Spammer. But they did teach me how to use my email filters properly.

Giving spammers credit for teaching you how to use e-mail filters properly seems a bit like giving virus writers the thumbs up for teaching you how to use your virus scanner.
Man if you've got filters that work 99.9% of the time then you are heck of a lot smarter than I am.
It may be a legit business now but IMHO it should not be. I suspect if sent some really hard core porn to the 6 yr old girl who lives next door I'd end up in jail. But if I sent it by e-mail it would be a legit business. IMO it's way past time to ban this kind of crap.
