Green looks IMO too close to terrain features. Not sure how blue would look in urban environments either. Blue and gray tend to mix.

zoom out with the ID tags and unit numbers on. White is already used to show where deep snow is

I can't believe I didn't think of snow. Especially considering my previous post here!
What about gold/bronze? It's different from yellow and it might be easier to see?

Re: One proposal
We are already discussing a possible 2 choice option for the mini map where you get the full range of height contours and most terrain ( with fields likely removed as they don't do much but distract ) and one that is a more bare bones option like Andy suggested where only the basic terrain is displayed along with units on a light coloured map so darker primary blues and reds would work for unit colours.....

Re: One proposal
As said easy way to find units is zoom out & switch ID tags on, saves a lot of time keeping your units cohesive as well due to all units of the formation being highlighted.
Mini map for me is just a fast way to centre the map on the area I want.

Which is really all it was ever intended for but in the days of 640x480 is showed larger than it does now. The other thing I would LIKE to do..... (which does NOT mean it WILL get done.....there are lots of things I would like to do that don't and never will)..... is this
Click on or mouse over the main map and get this
mouse over or click on the mini map and get this
so if you are using a full 200x160 map you see it all on the mini,so no scrolling required

in this hypothetical scenario, would it be possible to have the mini map in a small (as is now or similar) size and when you move your mouse over the mini map (or click) you get the expanded version?

What would be the point ? It interferes with nothing unless you are running one of the low resolutions and it would only apply to the CD version

It would be easier to glance over the mini map without having to move the mouse pointer there.

Re: One proposal
The mini map now and in the proposal covers the same area. Each pixel = on hex so if it reverted to the size it is now there is no guarantee it will be where you want to glance at it which would require scrolling it and the expanded size only partly covers 2 hexes and it would only get that big if you were using a 200x160 map

I only play the largest maps, but I get your point. It's better your way.
