Re: Ground Combat - anyone use it?

Would you understand any better if I told you my daddy did 28 years in the Corps?
Heh, OK, I have a thing about amphibious ops, and this is the SE4 equivalent. I even build specialized bombardment ships to give the Marines fire support

Re: Ground Combat - anyone use it?
quote: [b]I dunno, I'd rather spend my research points on ships than investing research points and resources building up troops so I can save a few planetsary facilities... On a huge planet, maybe it's worth it, but I'd rather rebuild personally.
The research cost is pretty trivial, isn't it? If you've already researched Construction to get either Mines or Fighters, then isn't it just 50,000 for small troops and 15,000 or so to get Ground Cannon III?
In 1.19, the AI made some dumb decisions about what to build. But the 1.27 AI seems at least twice as good. I would much, much rather save the resources required to build the facilities and get the extra resource production immediately rather than wait 5 to 25 turns to rebuild all the facilities. Plus, I WANT the colonists that breathe a different atmosphere.
The only time I *don't* use troops is in the endgame when I have more resources than I know what to do with and just go around destroying stuff as quickly as possible.

Another reason to capture a planet is to be able to access a facility that you can not build either yet or ever.

In my Last game, I captured a planet with a Nature Shrine on it. I was pretty happy. Plus, the race had Adv. Storage so the tiny world had 6 out of 5 facilities on it.

Re: Ground Combat - anyone use it?
Possum: I am with ya on that. I make assult ships (Tarawa, Guadacanal) and if I remember to I get big ship and add fighters to it (not necessarily a carrier) for a true assult group)....

(Geeze...you guys are a touchy bunch! )
Well... This isn't real life. Yes, in real life, you [B}need[/B} troops to take territory.
All I'm saying is that for all the effort, researching, building, transporting, etc... I'd just assume glass the planet and let my colony ship minster do the dirty work.
In MOO (1 or 2), I always tried to take a planet because of the possibility of new tech and sending troops to the planet wasn't such a pain in the arse. I'm glad I appear to be wrong (a lot of people seem to use it) so I'll make an effort to try ground troops out and see what I'm missing.
BTW, does the AI actually do ground assaults ok now? I remember there was a problem where they would glass the planet even after all defenses gone.
I'll try it out tonight, thanks for your comments.
