Re: How to selfdestruct mines?
I've found mines are a good supplementary defense and often can delay opponents by forcing them to research minesweepers.

Aren't mines a rather cowardly weapon, though?
Far less so than slaughtering millions of women and children on small civilian colonies at every chance you get. The mines at least offer them some protection.

Q - can you confirm that a ship with the self destruct component will self destruct?

No I can't. I didn't test it.

Re: How to selfdestruct mines?
I reported the missing selfdestruction for mines to MM.
And I tested the self destruct component in a ship and I worked perfectly.

Just like the butchering of defenceless beings that you mention, mines too are risk-free for the user, as with most new weapon technologies, and thus no better. What I don't appreciate is someone harming others when they have no chance of being harmed in return. It is the trait of cowardice.

I take it we're moving from mines in SEV to land mines in real life?

Re: How to selfdestruct mines?
Well, I was really just half-seriously continuing my point about it being a coward's weapon, as are most new weapons being made( i.e. missiles and the likes ).
No longer does it matter who has the bravest warriors, instead all that matters is who has the biggest brains in their midsts. I don't like the way weapons are evolving; more machine, less human. At least a few hundred years ago we had to send actual people to do the dirty work, while now we just drop a few bombs, or sit in a comfortable chair thousands of miles away, pushing a red button.
The dead are but numbers on a report that is received afterwards.

Re: How to selfdestruct mines?
While I will agree that violence and war are becoming too distant in modern society I think that's for another thread.
As for mines in SEV I really have no problem with them. In fact I love using them. That doesn't mean I don't go for your throat it just means mine is harder to get to.

Re: How to selfdestruct mines?
I've never actually bothered with them. Are they actually worth choosing over, say, a similar kT of satellites?

Re: How to selfdestruct mines?
I couldn't say. I rarely use satellites save for stationary "scouting"
Mines are nice because they're quick to build and you don't have to worry about making sure their weapons have ammo.
