Re: Other "underground" games...
What about Titans of Steel? I had the Last free Version they put out (1.4?) before they joined Matrix Games. There seemed to be a lot of noise about it then, but I haven't heard much since. Did it flop, or is it still going well? (Or does anyone else even play it? )

Earlier in this thread someone mentioned Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin, available from Battlefront.com. I haven't played that one (the second in the series), but I have played Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord (the first in the series). Combat Mission is tactical combat, like Close Combat, and it has a great system combining turn based strategy with real-time 3D combat. I would highly recommend these games.

Yep, it's a spectacular series. CMBB is a nice improvement to the first game, which was really extremely good.

Re: Other "underground" games...
I dunno if you consider a non-combat application a 'game' or not, but there's a pretty nice, totally FREE space-flight simulator to be had at www.orbitersim.com (this automatically forwards you to the more complex 'real' URL). It's been in development for years, with constant updates and improvements just like SE IV. The system requirements are remarkably low for a real-time simulation, too. Any computer assembled in the Last 5 years ought to be able to run it. If you have a high-end video card there are some special (very large) textures you can download to enhance it.

Re: Other "underground" games...
Thanks for the info on SP:WAW. I used to play Avalon Hill's Squad Leader with a friend in a college on the weekends. I downloaded SP a few days ago and am getting upset that I don't have more time to play it. I never thought a game would ever compete with my time with SEIV. SEIV is still great, just having a flashback to younger years of cardboard counters, dice, and rule books that fit into several 3-ring binders.

Well well, what do you know, Steel Panthers is still being talked about. I was on the art team that did the graphics for Steel Panthers 1 and 2. My fingerprints are on just about all the tanks, some of the interface and I did about a third of the terrain tiles!
I'm glad to hear that people are still enjoying it!
Cheers!
