The South Ossetian forces comprised around 2,500 officers and men, or 16,000, including reservists (but not including volunteers from North Ossetia and elsewhere). Many of the officers were thought to be from the Russian GRU.
Weaponry included:
15 tanks. T-55s and T-72s
24 Gvozdika and Akatsiya SPGs
12 D-30 towed howitzers
6 GRAD multiple-launch rocket systems
30-40 mortars
4 100mm Rapira anti-tank guns
24 APCs
22 Softskin infantry transports
6 Combat patrol vehicles
Several dozen Fagot and Konkurs ATGMs
4-6 Osa
3 Tunguska
3 Shilka
6 Strela-10 air defense rocket systems
12 23-mm ZU-23/2 twin anti-aircraft guns (some of which were mounted on GAZ-66 trucks)
Large numbers of Igla and Strela MANPADs
4 MI-8 multi-purpose transport helicopters
The South Ossetians will probably have even more equipment now.
