Maybe that's the port? If some router on the way does something to those packets it may cause problems. 8888 is a napster port I think. Some other port may work better...

Hmmm, it would be nice if changing the port fixed the problem. A cute magic trick=) I still cannot log in - generally nation, password, then "bad packet" crash.

Oh yeah something weird going on... I tried to connect yet again, and while waiting for it to get to the password prompt I went and did something else.
When I came back I saw it was at the password prompt and the text "isnt that what I sa" was entered at the prompt (not by me, by remote persons unkonwn). Weird... anyway, it crashed again after that
I figure your server port is conflicting with some other service you are running.
