Default X-Ray battle.

Figured I'd start a new thread for working out what happened in the battles for the scenario designers. I've included the times as close as I can.

1048: first wave lands.
1210: the First shots are fired, around B Coy's positions.
1245: the first few casualties arrive back in the LZ. These where not Airlifted out. They where treated in the LZ.
1300: 30-40 NVA attack 1st Platoon, B Coy, from two sides.
Lt Herrick tries to flank the enemy attacking 1st Platoon on the right hand side. He over reaches and gets cut off.
1315: 1st Platoon B coy, is hit by 82mm, 60mm mortars and RPG-2's.
3rd Platoon B coy, moves up on 1st platoons left. Then runs into heavy automatic fire, from "A covered MG position".
40-50 NVA then attack 2nd Troop.

More to follow.

This is what I have been able to find out, although it is probably already know and I am just wasting space, but here goes:

14 Nov 65

1048: 2 plts B/1/7 plus HQ land at LZ X-ray and move to dry ravine, supported by arty at LZ Falcon.

1120: 3rd plt B/1/7 plus 2 plt A/1/7 arrive, 3rd plt B/1/7 moves to dry ravine, A/1/7 moves to SW and left of HQ.

1210: final 2 plts A/1/7 arrive. PAVN units begin to arrive on battlefield. One plt B/1/7 chases PAVN and gets cut off by 2 companies of PAVN. Four pltns of PAVN move to south of LZ while 5 pltns attack the dry ravine opposite B/1/7.

1330: B/1/7 attacked by at least 2 Coy PAVN

1335: C/1/7 arrives and moves to south of LZ and attacks PAVN in flank. HQ moves to middle north of LZ.

1400: fighting ceases

1430: LZ turns hot. 1 plt D/1/7 lands between A and C coy while second plt D/1/7 moves to middle east of LZ.

1520: Hvy wpns and recce arrive. Recce moves to north of LZ.

1700: B/2/7 arrives, 1 plt moves in between A and C/1/7 while 2 plts move to north of LZ.

15 Nov 65

0630: Massive PAVN/VC assault against southern perimeter of LZ opposite C/1/7. 1 pltn of A/1/7 reinforces C/1/7.
C/1/7 over run.

0700: BROKEN ARROW.
- 2 plt B/2/7 (from north) move back into positions occupied by C/1/7 after broken arrow and dig in anew. Renewed attacks by PAVN and VC find not tired American forces (C/1/7) but fresh troops well dug in. PAVN/VC suffer further heavy casualties.

0910: A/2/7 arrives.

I also found the following, quoted here, which details the final battle in the south:

"The PAVN Commander knows that he had severely weakened and damaged the defenders in the Charlie Co sector the previous morning. What he does not know is that a fresh company - B Co 2nd Bn 7th Cav, had taken over the position after that engagement. That company, unmolested the previous afternoon, had cut fields of fire, dug new foxholes, fired in artillery concentrations, carefully emplaced it's machine guns and piled up ammunition(1).
Rescorla directed his men to dig foxholes and establish a defense perimeter. Exploring the hilly terrain beyond the perimeter, he came under enemy fire. After nightfall, he and his men endured waves of assault. To keep morale up, Rescorla led the men in military cheers and Cornish songs throughout the night(2).

Rescorla knew war. His men did not, yet. To steady them, to break their concentration away from the fear that may grip a man when he realizes there are hundreds of men very close by who want to kill him, Rescorla sang. Mostly he sang dirty songs that would make a sailor blush. Interspersed with the lyrics was the voice of command: “Fix bayonets…on liiiiine…reaaaa-dy…forward.” It was a voice straight from Waterloo, from the Somme, implacable, impeccable, impossible to disobey. His men forgot their fear, concentrated on his orders and marched forward as he led them straight into the pages of history.(3)

The PAVN assaults four separate times beginning at 4:22 AM. The last is at 6:27 AM. They are stopped cold, losing over 200 dead. B Co has 6 wounded. At 9:55 AM, a sweep outward is made which results in more enemy dead and the position secured".
