fatigue question

How, exactly, does fatigue affect combat? According to the FAQ and the manual addendum PDF, it makes you easier to hit, and at 100% fatigue you are easily killed. But, how does it affect combat below 100%? Does it reduce your defense? protection? And does it affect your attack skill? Strength? No stats seem to change when you right click your character.
