OT: Y10K is coming... Beware
I try and warn fellow programmers that the Y10K bug is coming and now is the time to start fighting it. Imagine when the years become 5 digits long, all the 4 digit year code will need to be redone.
Many people say, "My application will not be running then." Well, that was said the last time too!

Y10K nothing. What about the Y2038 bug? All 32-bit UNIX timestamps will overflow to be January 1, 1970 sometime in 2038 (I forget the exact date/time).

Of course, by then practically everything will have switched over to 64-bit (or more), which will be enough for near 300 billion years.

But what if there's these little entrenched programs everywhere, that nobody really thinks about?
We must prepare for Y10K!

Yes... you'd be amazed at just how much legacy code makes it into an operating system.... nobody touches the drivers for a disk drive, for instance....
Of course, by the time y10k rolls around, most of us will be either:
a) Long since dust
b) done facing the Final Judgement (computers hardly a concern after that)
c) Computer programs of some stripe
Now, the y2038 bug could be much worse.... depending on how the OS handles the overflow when it happens.

When I'm done facing the final judgement, I want my computer there with me!
I'm not addicted, nope nope nope.

Didn't we already hit the Y10K bug back in 2000?

Re: OT: Y10K is coming... Beware
We're still hitting it now. I have to scan drivers liscenes at work, and none of the ones that expire past 2050 scan correctly.
Why? Becuase instead of fixing the problem, some hurried programmer just stuck in logic that said that every year PAST 50 was 19xx, every year BEFORE that was 20xx..

Year 10K = Year 10 * 1,000 = Year 10,000. *Insert cheeky grin here*

You mean the Y 2K bug. And no we didn't hit it, it apparently has a -80 racial offense modifier.
