SE5 developers just have to change everything
I have downloaded and played the SE5 demo. Yes, it did crash on a memory error and take my system with it. Programming errors aside, why does the user interface have to be completely different???
Without my SE4 experience in knowing what I should be doing, I wouldn't have a clue how to do anything useful in this version. The interface is much more crowded and unintelligible. All the main page icons were different and there were very few mouse-over helps to make up for that.
I didn't have a chance to do any combat before the crash so I don't know if the three layer, ship setup makes any real difference in anything. I am used to the stability of SE4, so I will have to remember to save more regularly.
I was a little disturbed that the system view kept shifting each time my mouse crept over to any edge. Although, the view shifting is necessary because of the large identifiers that cover up the colonies.
It will be awhile before I hand over some big bucks for a clumsy interface. Maybe I'll get used to the thing. Maybe the demo will let me get all the way to turn 100.
