Post Command Authority - A Great Read

Years ago I read of drones firing Hellfire missles on Chinese tanks by Tom Clancy in his voluminous book, "The Bear and the Dragon." Now, he has repeated his uncanny ability to foresee what most of us armature political analyst missed, the incursion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine and Crimea. His last book, as he died last October, "Command Authority" is a fascinating read:

"Storm Zero Six’s automatic Arena system saw the incoming Hellfire missile, and it launched a rocket to defend itself from it. Fifty meters from impacting the tank, the Hellfire exploded, sending metallic shrapnel all through the trees.

The Arena worked once, but the second inbound Hellfire came too quickly behind, before the Arena could reset and reacquire the new target. The missile slammed into Storm Zero Six’s turret before the system could launch another defensive rocket."

From the National Review Online, we find the following excerpt:

Golovko added, “Volodin has his eyes on the Crimea, in Southern Ukraine, and he knows once Ukraine joins NATO, that will be difficult for him to achieve. The way he sees it, he has to move soon.”

Ryan said, “He is right that there is no treaty between Ukraine and NATO. And if he does invade, getting Europe on board to fight for the Crimea is a nonstarter.”

We have at least two scenarios depicting this current conflict in the game: Access west Sloviansk by Roman and Flashpoint Ukraine by mkr8683 converted from the original SSI.

Interesting. Btw this video shows the AT projectile getting blown up more like within 5-10 meters of the tank:

Ha, thanks for making that connection! The original scenario was from c. 1998, as well.

Clancy has a section of V-22's from the famed Thunder Chicken's flying without escort into a hot LZ. He posits this due to the addition of the Interim Defensive Weapon System (IDWS):

"The turret gun was called the Interim Defensive Weapon System; it was a late addition to the Osprey design, giving the big transport aircraft 360 degrees of covering fire."

The IDWS exist, there are Youtube videos and numerous Web references, however, I question that command would send a section of Osprey's, transport tilt-rotors into a hot LZ without attack helo escorts.

In another section Clancy depicts a Kiowa Warrior helo wearing 4 Hellfire missiles. Now, I would think the Kiowa would not be used for a strike but to lase targets for a section of Apaches somewhere 4-5 km of the Kiowa location. Why is say this? So, that the Apaches would shoot and scoot to avoid attracting counter fires, so that the Kiowa could pop up and take another look for a BDA.

Even with my comments here, Clancy's "Command Authority," remains well worth several hours of reading.
