Default OT: Eve On Line

Does any one here play or has played Eve On Line? If you have played, is it worth it? Are you still playing? If no why not?

I signed up for it last new years (2006) and played it till about august. I lost intrest in it around that time due to having so many other games like Oblivion, FEAR, Warhammer and a 360. I guess it's not that I really lost intrest, it's just that I want to fly the biggest and the best ship right away and thats not how the game works. Seeing some of the footage from the new patch (they added a patch with several new features and ships) made me want to get back into it. Well, I signed up for it, get this, LAST NIGHT hahah talk about timing on that one. Well. I get into the game, someone in the local system channel is leaving the game and gives me 100m isk. (think dollars) Well thats all good and great, let me learn some skills and I'm well on my way to owning a battleship. Well, I go pirate hunting and a group of player pirates ganks me. Long story short, I now have 40m isk. That really pi$$3d me off. But I got over it and I learned that the way I had my ship setup before really sucked. Overall, I like the game. I think it's worth it. It's addicting. And no offense to anybody here, but it's not the bandwagon of WOW. If your thinking of trying it, get the free 14 day trial first. I made the mistake of just straight signing up for it, it was a good thing I enjoyed the game.

I love EVE very much. Thing is, you don't really NEED to play incessantly to keep up with your buddies. Even a blistering noob right out of character generation has uses to a player corp. The game is plenty complex and there's always something new to do. The areas of the game that are lawless are truly lawless. There is a massive space opera-style theatre of war going on between a large number of really big player alliances wanting to claim the space for themselves.

At the same time, you can really and truly be whatever you want in the world. Miner, manufacturer, bounty hunter, pirate, soldier, stealth ship pilot, hauler, whatever interests you. Plus, seeing as there aren't classes once you get into the game, you can learn whatever skills you very well please and switch up as needed. There really isn't any character regret, as all the skills are useful some way or another.

Main downside is that it isn't for everybody. There's a heavy learning curve and carebear-type players get very disappointed very quickly, especially the first time they get ganked in unsafe space. The game does take some getting accustomed to, but once you get it, it's wonderful. Highly recommended.

Played for about 18 months- If you have a thin skin, you'll consider most players griefers, which is why its also known as grief online. It does have a fairly high learning curve. I left because the game is becoming more oriented toward large groups called alliances (blob warfare)at the expense of small groups/solo players, Lag, unresponsive customer support, farmers, and the lead dev's belief that alliance politics is more important than everything else.

Other than that it was fun for awhile. Actually I preferred Earth and Beyond due to its more cooperative nature (no PvP) while in Eve its watch your back and trust no one which is sort of counter-intuitive to its premise of corporation/ alliance cooperation.

High Security space is fun for afk, chatting, goofing around, while in low sec space you need to be on your toes and keep a sharp eye out. 0.0 space is supposedly lawless but with alliances controlling it, some areas are safer than hi sec. . unless some war is going on.

The alliance grouping is the one thing that many people sight as why they leave the game. Yet the people running EVE don't do anything to move people away from this. I have played games simular to EVE, but without the graphics, before and the joy and fun of playing often gets sucked out because of this. In order to survive you must join an alliance, and thus eventually turning the game from a thing of enjoyment, into a job. This Job feel is why I gave up on Galaxies, and a bunch of web based games like Planterion, and Earth 2045.

I had hoped that EVE would be different, at $15.00 a month to play, I would rather be paid to play than pay to play at a job. Thanks for the info guys.

I like Eve. Don't need to constantly level, which is nice, since skills are trained offline. There is a high learning curve, true... and your hard work can be gone in a flash, when someone vaporizes your ship. But ISK is easy to come by really as you get higher up in the game, and as long as you keep your (dirt cheap) clones up to date, you don't lose any skills, and thus you don't use the time invested into the game.

I think that the full PvP system is nice. In 0.0 system there's nothing preventing you from spacing someone except what the player creates, and even with alliances protecting you it's still dangerous. High security systems have no PvP(except corporation wars), but if you wanted to you could spend years in high corporation space with missions and stuff.

What stops other more experienced long term players from just killing you the moment they see you? Why invest so much into something if it can be taken from you so easily? Figure you run into someone who has been playing steady for three years now. Imagine they are a jerk and just enjoy killing easy prey because they can. That kind of thing isn't fun at all to the victim and from I have seen, this is the way things are in EVE. You have to stay in "safe" zones forever less you be destroyed by a dominating player.

Well, they have to FIND you first. Second there are player organizations that frown on things like that, and getting their 3,000,000 isk ship blown up is going to hurt them more than your 30,000 ship.

That said, I can't stand EVE's interface, so I didn't play long.
