No, that is mysterious:

If I own a besieged castle, and set my troops to move via clicking, i can then click on "move" on one of those commanders and have the option "move and patrol" among them. This might be inconvenient, but it is definitely working, for I used this many a time.

Odd. It's not working for me. Here's what I'm doing:

1) I click the commander icon and he turns white (selected).
2) I click the destination province, which happens to have a castle that I own with enemy troops besieging.
3) The "Move" command appears beneath my commander's icon and the move arrow appears.
4) I click the "Move" command to change the orders and the menu appears and it shows "Defend Province, Patrol Province, etc." but it doesn't have any option saying "Move and Patrol".

I'm playing in a window with sound off. Fade effect is off. It's a PBEM on World map. ANd I need to figure this out! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

HELP!

For 'move and patrol' to be selectable, the target province must (a) have a castle, and (b) be under your control. Obviously not the case here, you can't patrol an enemy province (even if you still own the castle, the province is considered owned by the enemy if this castle is besieged).

That makes sense but I don't get the menu when trying it on other provinces (owned by me) either. Something's not right... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/fear.gif

If these other provinces aren't castled, the 'move and patrol' option won't appear. And it won't appear with units that 'sneak' to the target province: for these you'll have to change 'sneak' to 'move', then 'move' to 'move and patrol'. A bit tedious, but it always has worked for me.

Aha, the commander is a sneaker. But doesn't this mean it's going to be impossible to complete a Move and Patrol if he's got non-stealthy troops (ie, I won't be able to choose Sneak)?

Edit: Just tried to Sneak first, then change to Move, then change to Move and Patrol but the option still isn't there. *sigh*

No, you can make him Move after he is already Sneaking, and when he is moving he can Move&Patrol. You do know that the fast way to Move with sneakers is to press Control while choosing the province to move in, don't you?

Yes, I use CTRL+move all the time but I'm still not getting the Move and Patrol option when I try Sneak and then Move first.
