Re: The XM813 30mm Autocannon
Thanks for all the clarification DRG.
I have a much better understanding of the trade offs between the two weapon classes. |
Re: The XM813 30mm Autocannon
It is important to remember the real purpose of this ammo, which is to take out infantry. The airburst is primarily designed to disable (Or worse.) troops that are in it's..."ability to defeat targets in defilade positions. (Northrop Grumman)" as taken from ref. 1 from the Northrop Grumman website, Ref. 1 below. Secondary to this is the ability to use this against helos and UAV's to a limited extent.
Next up "Point Detonation" designed for "in class" anti armor and soft targets. Finally the "Point Detonation with Delay" designed for use against troops within buildings and to a lesser bunkers based on type. https://militaryleak.com/2020/07/10/...ter-chain-gun/ And finally as to the STRYKER 30mm it's not fielded at this time. From the last ref. "...although the service said the decision should not delay plans to begin fielding the weapon to soldiers in 2022." https://taskandpurpose.com/military-...annon-fielding https://www.janes.com/defence-news/n...b-43d052efe123 https://www.janes.com/defence-news/n...-stryker-dvha1 https://www.janes.com/defence-news/n...petition-again Regards, Pat :capt: |
Re: The XM813 30mm Autocannon
Should we be increasing the rounds' HE kill rating for many systems to account for programmable ammo?
i.e. 120mm DM11 multi-purpose high explosive, M829A4 armour-piercing, M-337 HE-MP-T, APAM, 'Ainet'; 40mm Bofors, CT40, Super 40 Bushmaster; 35mm Oerlikon's AHEAD; 25mm PABM, etc |
Re: The XM813 30mm Autocannon
In my view probably not most programmed fire requires stationary fire & the majority of units that use it have a giro fitted & will often move before firing.
Timed burst has to be very accurate to work so fire against units in defile on a slope - through a window - at a helicopter etc requires Lase then set time fuse for exact distance. It would need extra HE kill only if has not used any move points or some such. For the impact it would have in a battle happy with as is. |
Re: The XM813 30mm Autocannon
I'm not going to make this hard, whatever we do in the game or code is well, whatever we do in the game. And that's fine.
The process breaks down much more simply then you might expect and is no different then with any other conventional ammo. The difference lays within "tools" used is all. No difference: Simple LRF and FCS to target - done. The difference: Less loader interaction required, shell is already equipped to be assigned detonation mission, FCS sends data to the shell via the gun or breech once loaded. In the case of this shell, in this thread, through wireless means. I found a very simple breakdown of this in the ref. below, I found more technical ones however, I felt except for attaining more in depth knowledge, I didn't feel it worthwhile for this discussion. Simply a case of KISS. https://www.overtdefense.com/2019/09...he-modern-era/ You'll note "our" airburst shell is the top picture used. I hope you also noticed those "jaundiced" looking guys in the trench of that picture weren't wearing their helmets, what a bunch of dummies!!!! :D Regards, Pat :capt: |
