Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
will it be special starts for all nations, or will there be a bunch of start locations and all nations will be randomly assigned one of the start positions?
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
2nd option, faster and easier :)
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
Working on the map now.
It will be random starting locations, each of us will be attributed one randomly. It can be nice to have "thematic" starting locations, but then we can know where each nations is exactly and it removes an element of mystery and the fun of exploring. Plus, I don't feel comfortable from a balance point of view about deciding who is who's neighbor. |

OK here is my proposition. Do not hesitate to comment / suggest now.
I did my best to try to produce something balanced for all 24 starting locations. For each location, I asked myself: if I were starting here, would I complain or would I rejoy myself due to its unbalanced nature? But at the end it is a difficult exercise, so feedback is welcome... as long as it comes soon enough to be taken into account. |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
I think its great. Although I wouldn't particularly like to be 20, 16 or 14, I still say the map looks pretty balanced and would accept any of those positions anyway. *knocks on wood*

Thanks Grijalva for feedback.
New version, with these changes: - # of the exact target provinces - less density in the centre, for players surrounded by other players (those mentionned by Grijalva) - analyzed connections made by Edi on the map. In particular, some locations are not the deadend they look like at first glance due to connected neighbors; islands are all connected to each other and finally to the main continent at severl points, so no reason to exclude them for land players. That also helped to reduce density in the centre. - moved starting locations giving already a VP or located on a "non start province" defined by Edi, since he must have had good reasons for those. I still have the technical part to do, but now I wait for more feedback, or at least confirmation by the game admin to implement this scheme. |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
Looking great for the most part. The second version definitely is an improvement. Only problem I see is starts 19 and 20 being too close to each other. (Only 2 provinces between them.) I think moving start #20 to province number #24 (just south of where it is now) would be better.

Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
Agree with Amhazair's observation.
Looking good Numahr, thanks for your hard work on this! |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
oops wrong thread, disregard ;)

Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
There hasn't been a turn yet. Not all players have joined.

Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
Thanks for feedback.
So: - starting locations in the South have been generally tweaked to give more space to every one, at the expense of a starting location close to the edge. - map file moded. You can find attached both the new map overview and the .map file. I double checked it, there should be no surprise. All this took quite some time to do, so please understand that I may be one of the last to upload my pretender... Edit: for some reason, uploading the files did not work. I will try again later. |

Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
We're still waiting for 6 of our Pretenders. I PM'd the players in question. If they're all submited in the next couple of hours I can start up the game tonight before bed, otherwise we'll start tomorrow.
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
Oh, I was sure mine is in. Let me double-check if I have correct pretender and I will submit it asap :)
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
Amhazair, have you settled on what the VP announcement "threshold" should be?

I misread this initially. Thanks |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
Who's the slacker?
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Upload Pretenders)
We're waiting for Agartha. Unfortunately I forgot to ask for a read receipt with my previous PM, so I don't even know if he saw it. I sent him a last PM just now.
In the meantime I guess I'll re-open the recruiting in case anyone wants to take over this powerhouse nation. If Welltimat shows up by midnight my time (which is in 6 hours) he retains his spot and I start the game, otherwise, anyone posting in this thread and having a pretender uploaded and ready by the time I come home from work tomorrow can take over his spot, and we start the game then. |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Well, we're off. Have fun all.
And may you eventually all bow to the inevitable dominance of the Druids. |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Wanna NAP?
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Huh, game started with wrong pretender somehow, anyone has that problem?
I guess I misclicked smth while submitting, so not game breaking. So unless there are other problems, I won't ask for restarting the game. |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
No issues here. I set the timer to 48h for the first turn in case something pops up, but I'll set it back to 24h for turn 2.
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Turn1 is automatically 48h, even on 24h hosting :)
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Yes, I noticed. After changing it, obviously. :)
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
where is the tga file for this map?
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
you might need to download the original faerun map first, and add Numahr's files...not sure though.
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Only original, you don't need .map file at all :)
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
72 hours for turn 1. Wow. This game is going to take forever. What takes so long about turn 1?
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Probably long to make sure everyone's here. Apparently... everyone's not...
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Let's kill the slow ones :) It's big map, long game, so we want only people that can submit turns fast :)

i just noticed, that i made my turn and then forgot to send it in, so i am rather grateful for the long time on the first turn :)

Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Only C'tis left? Executor? Is there a penalty for last? Can't expand on Turn 2? Give all gems to random opponent? Abandon hope Ye who enter here.
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
What exactly is the holdup? It's turn friggin' 1.... Wake up. Take turn. It takes literally 5 seconds.
I propose an all-against-one alliance against C'tis just to speed the game up. |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
the "penalty" for an early stale is usually an early defeat, at least that's been my experience :)
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
I've played some games with Executor but I don't remember him to be a slow player.
There should be reasons for that... |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
I'm in another game with him right now. He was in the process of moving and I believe that there is an internet issue.
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Thanks for letting me know. He certainly hasn't opened the PM I sent him yesterday yet. Could you point me to the game thread in question, I'll see if there's more info there and/or if that game's admin knows something.

Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
It's the Song of Ice & Fire game; Perhaps Corwin has some news.

Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Thanks, I PM'd Corwin, let's see if he knows more.
In the meantime, I'll ask for a quick show of hands: If Executor has having internet trouble at his new place, I'd hate to have him stale because of this, but on the other hand there's no way to know if it'll be solved fast or not at all. On the other hand since we're still on the first turn it might be easy to find a sub, or possibly even restart the game with a new C'tis player. (Though I am quite anxious to get this show on the road to be honest.) Hosting is scheduled less than 3 hours from now, so one way or another I'll make a decision by then. |
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Tough call. I vote to postpone the host, give EX a little more time (although his last post was almost a week ago), and simultaneously see if we can find a sub.
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Yeah, add 12h, post for a sub, with a note that it may be temporary [and give Executor 3-5 turns to show up]. Or even offer permament sub, if he does not like the pretender etc. Executor should have informed you about his potential problems, especially if he did it in the other game thread.
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
I've played more games with Executor than any other player, and know him well enough to say that bailing isn't his thing at all. So I'd say it's very likely that he's having trouble getting an internet connection at his new place. (since he did say on IRC that it might take him a few days to get setup there.)
I'm definitely not looking to sub-in here on a full time basis, but if there's no word from Executor in the next X hours (X being however long you want to delay it for him), then I can offer myself up for playing the first few turns until he comes back (as I'm very confident he will be back). @ Amhazair - PM me, or find me on IRC if Executor doesn't show and you want me to play his turns. But bare in mind I'm on UK time, so if you delay 12 hours for Executor, I'll likely need another few hours to get setup. As for example, 12 hours from the current deadline is early hours of Saturday morning for me, and there's little chance me being up at that time on a Saturday unless I'm just getting in :) |

Excellent timing Calahan, and it really helps out. PM sent. (Just as I had the entire "looking for sub" thread ready, but luckily just before I posted it. ;))
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
I wasn't expecting an introduction to the hassles of huge MP games for at least a few turns... Hopefully these will be minimal. ^_^ I foresee a lot of weekend pausing...
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
These things do happen from time to time, but I for one am still excited about an opportunity to face off against such worthy foes on a truly unique map. I'm sure it wil be worht the wait(s). :)
|
Re: Troubling Times: Large EA CBM Game (Started)
Just woke up folks, and no reply from Executor to the emails and PM's I sent him. (btw, "Hi Everyone", I'm subbing for Excutor / C'tis until he returns)
I've got a bit of a hangover from last nights activities, but I'll sort my head out, get the map and mods etc setup (I've got the turn file), and submit the missing C'tis turn so the game can get running properly, at some point soon. Give me say two hours (noon my time) and I should have the first turn ready to roll. (main delay, if any, will be working out exactly what Executor was planning to recruit. But that shouldn't take me that long) |
