ship movement slowdown on new computer

Hello, I have been happily playing space empires and assorted mods for years. I have picked up a new computer and the ship movement is terribly slow. The machine runs win xp, pent4/3gig with a gig of ram and ati pro card. I searched the forums for the problem and tried solutions mentioned-ran game in win 95/98 and 00 emulation, no help. Changed colors to 16 instead of 32 also no help. This is my favorite game of all time but the ship speed is making it unplayable. Someone plz help. I have all newest drivers and its defragged.

I suggest upgrading to win98 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

It sounds like you've already seen the other thread about slowdowns from the search engine. Hopefully someone else can help more.

I've never heard of a foolproof fix for it. Wish I could help...I just live with it.

Best I can determine is that it's an XP problem. I have it too and have tried everything I can think of unsuccessfully to fix it. I turned off ship movement and use the "movement lines" option instead and this is a pretty good work around. There have been previous threads about this problem, but nothing has fixed it for me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Slick.

I haven't had ship movement on since I opened the box (envelope). Running XP and haven't seen a problem. Does it only happen with ship movement?

Re: ship movement slowdown on new computer

It happens during ship movement in combat and during all strategic moves on main screen.

Recently got a new computer and had the same thing happen. I'm discovering that I hate XP for a varierty of reasons. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

If you have CD music on and have another non-music CD in the drive - it does cause a major slowdown.

I have XP and don't have problems. Although I only play simultaneous turn games so the ships aren't supposed to move anyway. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Can someone describe in more detail what is happening and when? I will try it out and see if I can duplicate it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">For me, and I think others in simultaneous games, when viewing a combat replay, it's agonizingly slow (and if you put it on fast combat, it's TOO fast to see).

For those playing solo games, I suspect watching a chip take its move is the same way.

Re: ship movement slowdown on new computer

Turn off all ship movement animation (in the main game options screen and the combat screen), and turn on "fast ship movement" or some such. IIRC, this should alleviate the problem. If not, try various combinations of these settings being on and off, as well as turning off the "Allow CD Music" option in Data\Settings.txt, as mentioned previously.
