OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
Though I hate to say it, sometimes I can get a little burned out on SEIV, but I honestly dislike almost all games that aren't a turn-based strategy game. So, here's the question; does anyone know of any other good turn-based strategy games? Below are the ones I have (albeit there's only a couple)
-SEIV -Galactic Civilizations Suggestions are very welcome. GalCiv Lasted me for a month or so when I took a break from SEIV (except for PBW). However, there are several things about GalCiv that....really annoy me. So it's done with for now, and I'm playing SEIV again. But in the future, I'm going to get burned out on it, and need something else to play. Thanks in advance for any suggestions that are posted. |
Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
Well, there's Dominions 2...

Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
There are always the old classics, like Master of Orion 1/2 and Master of Magic. Very few worthwhile TBS games have come out in the past few years...
|
Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
Dominions qualifies under TBS, though it is quite different from SEIV (Dominions emphasises the military, while SEIV is mainly focused on economics).
You might want to look among older games, including some that aren't widely known. Emperor of the Fading Suns for example, or one game whose name I have forgotten (Tales of Balor, or something along these lines; I will look up for the correct name). Then you have Civilization and its siblings, including Alpha Centauri, but I have never been fond of Civilization. |

Well you could try Civization 3 Conquests. Its quite a mainstream game, but there are a lot of mods out there, which transfer the game into a science fiction world, or even in the warhammer universe. Other than Dom 2, MoO 2 its probably the best TBS game out there, excluding SE 4 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

And I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Total War series yet. I should be getting Rome: Total War in a couple of months since by all accounts its a very good game. I also wish that there were more squad-level turn-based games. I loved X-Com and Jagged Alliance. The new X-com game and Fallout: Tactics were just bad. Edit: And how about the stuff from Paradox Game? Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron etc. I've never played those myself but they have plenty of dedicated fans. |
Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
Paradox games are not turn-based, though they almost play as TBS games. The only difference is for multiplayer, where pausing a lot is not an option, and you need to remain Online for at least a few hours. Very annoying if you cannot play this way, and Paradox has no intentions of switching back to TBS.
And since we are speaking of rogue-likes: my own favourite is Angband (a good site for Angband and its variants would be this one), but ADOM is worth a try as well. |

Surely you made www.shrapnelgames.com your first stop? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I also have to recommend Dominions 2. Just as I tell them in the Dom2 forum here that if they like Dom2 they should grab the demo for SEIV, I also feel that anyone who likes SEIV would do well to at least grab the demo for Dominions 2. Very different games but I truly feel that the addictive qualities are for many of the same reasons. |

Rome Total war is FANTASTIC!!! The 3d effects in the battle sometimes made me forget was playing the game and not just watching a game movie http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif It's not "turn based" when it comes to combat however just so you know. |
Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
Well if you get desperate there is always Civ, there are 3 of them

Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
The latest Version of Age of Wonders is Shadow Magic, a sort of improved Age of Wonders II. So you should go for Shadow Magic if you want to play this game, and skip Wizard's Throne. I have heard the first Age of Wonders was somewhat different, but I would have to compare notes with Spoon to know. (That, or simply pick Age of Wonders 1 at the local store; cannot be a bad buy for one buck after all)
Back on the topic of Age of Wonders: I would say it is an interesting game, especially for single-play (and better than the Heroes of Might and Magic series if you ask me). My main gripe with the game is PBEM, where battles between players are resolved through a very peculiar system. I do not know about the third-party content offered by this game though. |
Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
Strategic Command from Battlefront is well worth a look.
They have demo available. |

I like 101st Airborne, although it's no longer available. 82nd Airborne should be available soon. Check it out on the Shrapnel site.

Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
One game mentioned here that i canīt stress enough how good it is, is Emperor of the Fading Suns, while the stock game is a little flawed, there are 2 mods that correct the majority of the bugs and add a whole new dimension to the game (Nova and Hyperion mods).... i myself like the Nova Mod for EFS since i think that Hyperion adds too much micromanagement, but EFS with the Nova mod is a superb game... itīs one of the few games that simply donīt leave my HD...

Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
A really good one is the The Operational Art of War: Century of Warfare Edition.
There are dozens of scenarios and it gives the best of the old board wargame feel. I am currently playing a WWI scenario with a map covering all of Europe plus the colonies. I fully expect to be playing this game out for the next 3 years. (we are averaging about 1 turn a week - each turn takes roughly 6 hours) I have Emperor of the Fading Suns but I do not think it works anymore with Windows XP. How do you make this game work. I do not remember if it is multi-player. It is a game that would be a great multiplayer I think. |
Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
I've been keeping an eye on the development of Empire Deluxe Enhanced Edition, speaking of old-school games that won't go away. Strictly in the "Beer and Potatoes" (if I may mix metaphors) Category, but looks like it should be entertaining.

Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
I played a demo six months or so ago that was X-Com developers doing squad turn-based... What was the name of that thing...
It was fun, but I didn't want to pay a subscription fee while getting whipped by people who obviously knew the ropes really well. |

www.bethsoft.com A whole line of CRPG's that define the term 'groundbreaking'. www.elderscrolls.com for the latest, Oblivion, which will feature a map editer capable of semi-randomly generating realistic terrain (Check the screenshots), NPC's with a daily schedule; if an NPC is told to eat something in the schedule, they may take actions as varied as buying some food from a store, go out and hunt some grub or pick your or another NPC's pocket and possibly be arrested by the guards. Which could present difficulties for you, if you need them for a quest. And, you can ride horses and therefore probably engage in mounted combat. All of this in a creative and original world with tons of detail. |

depends on your taste in games. There iS Pacific War by matrix games (they also have many others, ck their site) Domionions, Might and Magic IV, Disciplies, and others, you need to specify the type of games you like, Example, fantasy, sci-fi, war games etc.

EFS allows multiplayer using PBEM or Hotseat and there are several mods and specialized maps only for multiplayer.... but is kinda hard to find someone to play it by PBEM these days... i myself play solo with the Nova mod and sometimes hotseat with a friend that likes the game too... |
Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
I have no problem with EFS on Windows XP, without any kind of specific setting (I am using SP1, and the Home Version for lack of anything better than that). There might be a problem with sound or the like, but VDMS would take care of such problems. I should perhaps go back to playing this game once of these days. Hmm.

Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
I have no problem with old games in WinXP (even MoM which everyone says wont run). But I have 2 drives. My C: is NTFS format which makes WinXP run so nice, and my D: for games is the older FAT32 file format.
Alot of the problems I see with WinXP Im thinking might be in there. If people upgrade to WinXP then the harddrives stays in the older format. They dont seem to have problems with games. If people install WinXP or it comes installed, then its usually formated NTFS style which runs faster and less file problems, but doesnt seem to like older games. |
Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
I have never noticed any difference at all when running old games from a FAT32 partition/drive as compared to a NTFS partition/drive in WinXP or Win2k... DosBox is good for running actual DOS games, no need for voodoo magic or dual booting in that case. Games written for Win95/98 that were a hybrid of DOS and the windows layers on top of DOS don't work too well in DOSBox, and sometimes need an actual win98 install. WinXP is better at running old games than Win2k, but still not too good at it...

Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
If you have about $50 to drop($30 for the GBA, $10-$20 for the game), get a classic gameboy advance(the non flip top Version), and Advance Wars 1 or 2, they are excelent war strategy games you can take with you where ever you go. It's kinda like Empire Deluxe, but each unit is set up to "rock, paper, scissors" another unit. Navy is a little underpowered, and air is a little overpowered but it's still fun. You also get to chose from about 16 different Commanding Officers which define your army's traits. Also there are many "tactics" games for GBA, like Fire Emblem, it's like Advance wars but with RPG characers instead a modern army, also Tactics Ogre: Knihgt of Lodis, one of my Favorites, you raise an army of 32 charachers, customize their classes, spells, skills, and armor, and go on an adventure to retrieve a powerful artifact. It has excelent multiplayer if you can find someone else who has it. I haven't played them yet, but Final Fantasy Tactics and Onimusha Tactics are similar to Tactics Ogre. There are also lots of RPG adventure games out for GBA too.
I second Stars! It's a little primative but excelent. Alpha Centauri and it's expansion are VERY good, too. |
Re: OT: Anyone know of any other good TBS games??
Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire & Age of Wonders-Shadow Magic are superb TBS games. Both are very moddable & multiplayer frendly & stable ( hotseat for both as well is lan & direct IP ). AC/AC otherwise known as SMAC was giving a 97% by one of the leading game magagzines. Highest ever!
