SE RPG community dying *sigh*
Well, the topic says it all.
I am in Space Empires since the end of '98, and back then the community used to be FAR more active. far. Now it is pretty much dead, aroud 10 people left...ohwell. And the major judj-hadrian conflict affected it much, many people left because of it, and it resulted in separation of old players from the rest of the Ladder. It is sad, i always liked the Role-Playing of Space Empires the most. Just wanted to let people know. ------------------ Emperor Klis't of the Taera Republic. Proud member of the League of Empires. Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
Wow is it really dead?
I'm new to the game and genre and thought the community for SEIV was the best I've seen for any game. Not the biggest but the best. I just started a game on PBW and we have 10 players. That can't be everyone. There are hundreds registered at PBW. Or am I missing something. When TaeraRepublic refers to Space Empires is that some smaller group of which I'm not aware? What was the "major judj-hadrian conflict" anyway? Don't die now community! I'm having too much fun. |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
It is not dead.

Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I think Taera is referring to people who not only multiplay, but do it in an RPG fashion. That means that they don't go "out of character" while using out of bounds communication like email. I intend to roleplay as much as I can in my current PBW game (with you Letharg). So for example, in stead of saying "Please move your ships away!" I'll say:
"The diplomatic emmisary of the Dragon Empire respectfully conveys the wishes of his Emperor. It is Our desire that you clarify the intent of your vessels who have entered into Dragon space. Be aware that if no explanation is forthcoming, forthwith, we will treat them as hostile." |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I'm just curious about what's always going on between Hadrian and Judj. I mean what the hell is the big deal between them?

Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I'm not so interested in the judj-Hadrian thing... I'm more interested as to why they think we should all know about it :P
Back to the RPG topic.. every game I play, any communication between players I do in "Role" unless it's technical Queries or similar. The RPG community aint dead, we just dont have a website that tells everyone else what's happening http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I think Taera means RPG in larger scale. There used to be a lot of Role Play were people wrote tens of pages in forums. Nowadays I've seen only little compared to that. The Judj-Hadrian thing has been around since SE3 so I don't know a lot about it.

Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I, too, intend to be a pure role-player; I'm less interested in winning the game than I am in telling the stories of my people.
Of course, I haven't actually _played_ yet; I'll be joining my first PBW game in a day or two. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I enjoy roleplaying my races, too, but my Favorites, the Tiktsin, are too pacifistic to be competitive in a game against human players. My Rrurrr are combative enough for PBW, but my lack of experience is getting them crushed in Geo's tourney.

Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I'll probably RP in my PBW games, but the race I'm using right now has a rather..non helpful.. attituide. Kind of a "go away or we'll BLOW you away" deal http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
My race, the Irha-Nrr, are a little _too_ helpful at times I think. A while back under the thread "Game Stories" I posted a chronicle of the game in which I developed their personalities, and they turned out to be militant pacificsts; they want all the fighting between empires to stop, and are willing to destroy every starship in the galaxy if that's what it takes.
A new race I've started fiddling with are serene sun-worshipping flowers; their personalities are unformed at this point but considering how the Irha-Nrr turned out I'm expecting them to declare jihad and start feeding enemy populations into black holes at any moment. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
"serene sun-worshipping flowers" I like it. In my oldest game I'm playing a race of berserker bunny rabbits. Cute, fluffy and deadly.
But I haven't seen much interest in going along with that sort of role playing so I've toned it down and just try to make deals. Well actually not that many deals. Mostly war. |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I hope this community is not dying.
It was the discovery of Runesword I which led me to Schrapnel Games and thus Space Empires IV. Having mentioned Space Empires IV to my friends who used to play Ascendancy and Master of Orion 2. Their interest has sparked, due to the fact that this game is so good. I'm hoping that they will join the SEIV community and actively contribute. What I would like to do is design/alter a race to become one of the factions in a science fantasy milieu of my own creation. Humanity had left it's cradle with the aid of sleeper colony ships. An age later a strange discovery enabled mankind to travel faster than light, the age of the Magi had begun. A Utopian society was the result...at least on appearances. Several factions involved in a quiet war, with the hidden immortal founders of this society attempting to heal the diverse problems found within. Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
Well, there is a fully automated ladder for SEIV and SEIII at www.seladder.net/seladder
There's a few small things going on right now, but a lot of members are not doing much. |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
OK. I'll bite. How does this ladder work? I followed the link, and didn't find a FAQ or HowTo or Man or anything. How does this system relate to SE4? Is this a game of games or something? Looks like you are using some sort of map and economic overlay, but how it works is not at all clear . . .

Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
Yeah, the ladder is kinda hard to get at first. The rules page should give you more of an idea.
The basic idea is that you make an empire on the ladder, and you get a position on the map. Your economy is based on treaties and the number of spaces you have colonized. Of course, you have to spend money to make treaties and colonize new territories. |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I don't know, it seems like it would be kinda fun to play the Illuminati in a RPG way. Could get real interesting.
I played a Forum Only game for 4 months Last year, and that got to become extremly addictive. (Says a lot about my life.) Too bad that site crashed, and the players just could not get it together again to restart the game. (All had lost too much to just simply start over.) SEIV give a player a chance to really get involved in RPG. ------------------ "We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats! Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
SE RP communities are dying off some what. They are mainly, right now, cut off from most of the SE universe. I still get mails from people asking 'Does SE have any RP communities?'
Much of the isolation is due to the flame wars between judj and I (good to say none have erupted my NeoVerse RP community). MM has even said they are ashamed of the back stabbing and piss-poor player conduct in these communities. Much of the fight lies in the ideals of Judj and I. much in the same way Liberals & Conservatives fight. We just do't like how the other guy runs his stuff. I prefer letting the fans develop the community as they need and running the community on the honor system. Judj prefers heavy law and strict enforcement from administrators. On many occasions, I've gone to the peace table and got royally screwed over. Judj refuses to take any offer of peace I can give him. So be it. I just hope the communities can begin to heal. Right now, I hold high hopes for the Multiverse Project's NeoVerse RPG. I've built a basic history for the universe. It's centered around 30 some on races. 20 of which are from the SE universe. I'm looking for people to start filling these roles and help develop the races further. If anyone is interested, let me know or stop by http://www.hyperionbase.com/multiver...se/index.shtml I hope this explains part of the problems in SE's Role Playing sectors. ------------------ -------------------- HADRIAN AVENTINE snpacifica@yahoo.com http://www.hyperionbase.com |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I forgot to mention, for those not getting it, it's like SE, we base the entire community around it, except players can expand on the universe by playing as the races. It's a free-form role playing game.
We basically, go into the forum and make Posts role playing our stories and such for fun. Just get along and hang out. Kinda like those trekkies/trekkers. We are merely expanding upon greatness with the hopes we are staying true to the dream. ------------------ -------------------- HADRIAN AVENTINE snpacifica@yahoo.com http://www.hyperionbase.com |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
..IMO the SE rpg is starting to die out because of the arguments carried out in public, slandering each other, etc.. like we care to see it...
I am a member of the ladder but I rarely bother to rp because I lose interest after seeing all the ridiculous flamewars. [This message has been edited by AJC (edited 28 June 2001).] |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I invite you to join the NeoVerse, if you wish. Things are small and good right now. A newborn community, if you will, waiting to be shaped. I also extend this offer to anyone else who wants to join this community founded on the honor system and space empires iv.

Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
I just finished reading the post, and just applied to that NeoVerse, and thought i'd say it here - people, come and join it.
The reason i say it is that I like SE RPing very much, and i find it most enjoyable when there are different people, and many people. That community is small at the moment, but i hope it to become bigger. Well, thats all i wanted to say at the minute, just think about it people. RPing is FUN! ------------------ Emperor Klis't of the Taera Republic. Proud member of the League of Empires. E-Mail - Ora Planet - Taera Republic - League of Empires |
Re: SE RPG community dying *sigh*
Thank's for the plug man, the NeoVerse will soon become an open, public community. I just talked with Aaron, he's going to send me some race info as soon as he gets the chance.
I'm looking for people to play all kinds of races listed. Mainly the 20 races from SE4 plus a few more. Email me if you are interested. [mail]DoggodIsGod@cfl.rr.com[/mail] ------------------ ------------------------------------ HADRIAN AVENTINE pacea@solar-outpost.com http://www.hyperionbase.com |
