Is it okay...

... to use game concepts like Sauromancers and Serpent Cult dancers on this site: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Paludia...ign_Setting%29

I haven't actually used anything from dominions III on this site, so it's ok if you say no.

Re: Is it okay...

That would be up to Kristoffer at Illwinter.com
But since over 90% of Dominions is based on research into real mythologies then Id guess it would be ok.

You might take a look at the interesting thread on using a running Dominions game as a fluid everchanging DnD campaign world.

Of course it is OK http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I don't mind people reading about mythology or history, regardless of if it comes from this world or my mind http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

If you feel like it you can leave a note about it.

Also:
-Eleionomae, nymphs of the marsh.

Do they look like female crocodiles and and seduce lizards or do they appear as human females? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

That's a good question... I suppose I'll have to decide... or else make it a shape-shifter.

Perversely enough, I could see a crocodyle-headed nymph seducing lizard men, it's something about those crocodyle-eyes...If you're not running away from them, you just have to stare.

Well, if a nymph can seduce a lizard shaman... :p

Perhaps I will make a mod out of the d&d page of mine someday... (with care NOT to violate copyright protection, that is...)

You won't have to worry about copyright protection issues unless you are earning money from the work. For example you could use ideas and pictures from your favorite games to create your MOD and/or MAP. You could not use ideas and pictures from your favorite games if some company or individuals offered you money for the work.

Re: Is it okay...

That doesn't sound right NTJedi. I think it's illegal to copy protected work no matter what you do with it. It's obviously more serious if you sell it though.

Re: Is it okay...

That comes up often. Just to speed this up, a back and forth conversation usually brings it down to both people being abit correct. "you wont have to worry" usually refers to "they wont come after you" unless you make money on it. And yes, it is illegal to use part of someone elses works in your own wether you make money or not.

ByTheWay, the "you dont have to worry" isnt always true either. Its based on the idea that there is nothing to sue for but I have seen actions taken against people for reasons other than money.

In any case, an important factor HERE is that if you use another game as part of a map or mod then you need permission from the original company or it cannot be posted or linked to on forums owned by Shrapnel. We have had some. And they did ask. You might be surprised to find that we are now slightly over 50% on them getting permission.

Re: Is it okay...

It's not even always illegal to use part of someone else's work. Acts of parody or satire, reporting, education, or (sometimes) use of a small part of something else are all generally considered protected. So, for example, Weird Al could get away with making his parodies without permission (even though he makes money from them; and, he actually does get permission, because that's the kind of guy he is). TV news stations don't have to pay royalties if they cover an event at which some kids are singing "Happy Birthday", though the exact same footage shot as part of a movie would require royalties and permission. I could show my classroom a map of Middle Earth if it were relevant to, say, a unit on Tolkein. And Google can put up image thumbnails on its search pages without getting busted.

The usual five-letter acronym applies; this is just my somewhat-informed understanding of things. Pasha, legally able to leave out the N from the acronym, could maybe do better. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

True enough. Technically. But I have seen cases of CDL (ceased and desist letters) being sent and websites complying even though it might not survive in court.

Perfect explanation! Some people are just so paranoid, must be from watching too many movies.

Re: Is it okay...

heehee. Its only paranoia if it isnt true. Right or wrong legal question doesnt matter much if you cant do it.
