The City of the Damned

I just happened to find this in a little MP game. Wow, I'm continually finding really cool new stuff in Dom3! Thanks to the developers for making such a fun game.

Assuming I manage to send in a commander who actually doesn't die, does he need empty slots to carry any items out of the site?

I found that site once only and it was in a MP game.

I had just a few turns to try to use it before I got swamped but yeah, you need slots to carry items.

Priests were pretty good to send in there as often when/if you got attacked it was by the undead.

I had a variety of results ranging from You Die, You fight XY and Z and get an item and got tossed into inferno and spat out in a random province where.. the commander died.

Worth it? Probably not (sample size is small tho!)

Cool as all get out? Definitely.

Re: The City of the Damned

For me "city of the damned" was named right. I sent in a good 2A,1B,2H priest guarded by 10units to have him insta-die from a trap. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Every time I searched... lethal trap in addition to fighting an undead group. When I finally got a unit who could consistantly survive the traps my total rewards over a 2year (24turns) period was less than 100 gold. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif Worth it? After those 24turns I decided it wasn't & stopped searching. However, I've heard others have had better luck and it later turned out there was a also Strange Opening (misfortune magic site) there as well (bringing me from Luck0 to Misfortune1-2 in the province) which may have had something to do with my bad luck there.

I've found that a Troll King works well.

Sometimes the final attack sends you to Hell. Beware.

Re: The City of the Damned

Thanks for the tips! But I'm really hurting for Earth gems in this game, so Troll Kings are not an option. I'm thinking I'll send in some Vampire Counts. Maybe with a Skull Staff for Wither Bones, plus a few slaves to Reinvigorate or Leech. It'll be interesting to see if their immortality works in the City.

I didn't know units could accompany the commander, I guess it's like the Void Gate in that respect. I'd need a Ring of Warning to bring 10 bodyguards, right?

Re: The City of the Damned

I got all my commanders killed except a pretender that only got so wounded he became worthless in a SP game I was running (myself vs myself, so I could test as much as I wanted).
I constantly got killed by traps, attacked by things only R'lyeh might find pretty, such as horrors and abominations.
Looks totally unusable to me.

Not a lot of luck in these stories. Does anyone have a story of how this site worked out for them? Or some good item that was retrieved? I'm very curious as I've never heard of this site.

There's more bad then good while searching. I've posted a list of ideas/suggestions of what could be added into the magic site. The best feature would be if the magic site could be moddable where players could add new events.

For a long SP game it paid off for me:
My good major events:
5733 gold found in one turn
a second unique added into the game (Ol Kans Sceptre*fireballs*)

so this magic site makes it possible to have two identical uniques in the game! If you're lucky enough.

Re: The City of the Damned

Bad experience here as well. Tried four times, got only trouble for no reward but measily gold, gave up.

But I had Misfortune 3, so that may be reason.

Re: The City of the Damned

I saw a Ring of Sorcery pop out once, so thats pretty good.

Re: The City of the Damned

I had one of the unique tomes pop out once, and one turn with 2000+ gold. Most successes provided only a few dozen gold. But I had horror attacks instead of undead attacks, which was rough,

I suspect it was a different "hunt for treasure" site, not the "city of the damned" per se. This was in a SP game long since completed and deleted, so I can't go check.

I think City of the Lost is the other one where you can do "adventures" for random stuff.

Never seen these and they sound like fun, what kind of magic search finds them?

Death for The City of the Damned. I used Dark Knowledge so I'm not sure about level.

Re: The City of the Damned

Must be ultra rare, I have never seen them before and I always search for death. Unless I have overlooked them of course, always a possibility in the late game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

What magic search finds City of the Lost?

Re: The City of the Damned

I've seen it all of twice, and only once in my game.

It's wicked fun. I wish it was more common.

Adventure Sites

Re: The City of the Damned

Thanks RamsHead.

Looks like I'm gonna be happy I found the City of the Damned!

I tried out the Forgotten City and in a single turn my guy was:

- Attacked by a Lesser Horror
- Entered the Forgotten City, got shot and killed by a huge ballista bolt, then:
- Got attacked by the Abomination of Desolation. Leave me alone, doom horror! I'm already dead! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif (I think he may actually have survived the bolt, but it looks funny like he was killed twice.)

The City of the Damned is a walk in the park in comparison.

Among the many wonderful items you can find in the City of the Damned, you can find the mysterious and powerful ... Slave Collar. Nooooo .... don't wear it!!! Bah.

Immortals do return from being killed in the City. And Disintegrate works pretty well on the Maker of Ruins http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Re: The City of the Damned

Behold, peons... the power of hex diving!

The Forgotten City and the City of the Damned are both rare and unique, their bitmask indicates they cannot be found underwater.

The Forgotten City is a level 3 astral site. The City of the Damned is a level 2 death site.

They both have power 192 - enter for adventure! The argument for this power (same place in the file that the # of gems goes for gem income) is 10 for the Forgotten City and 7 for the City of the Damned. Maybe other values would enable other adventures? Who knows?

No other sites have this power.

In addition, the City of the Damned has a 2% chance of horror marking you each turn you stay in the province, and the Forgotten City has a 1% chance of cursing you each turn you stay in the province.

DOOM!

These sites sound like some good fun! Can't wait to find one myself http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Both are also listed in the DB.

Re: The City of the Damned

I got a message a few times that my commander had been cursed when entering The City of the Damned. Weird thing was, he always got diseased, not cursed. It was okay, though, he was an immortal vampire, so he got better.

Edit: I finally got a unique item out of the City, it's the Rod of Death (now I have 2 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif). I ended up just sending in H1 priests with some Pikeneer bodyguards. The priests died a lot, but they're cheap enough to be expendable.
