State of the game....

I played SEIV avidly a year ago. Life reared it's ugly head and SEIV was put on hold. I never got SEIV gold.

I'm wondering where SEIV is now a days? The foums seem much, much quiter. Is SEIV dying?

How has Gold improved multiplayer? Is anyone using TCP/IP?

PBW. It was in it's infant stages when I left. What about now? Are there lots of games going on and new one being created often?

What about the general changes with Gold and the latest Modpack? Will someone give me a detailed 'review' compared to Last year at this time??

I'm considering jumping back in and buying gold.

Thanks,

Ken

Re: State of the game....

Well, the growing anticipation of MOO 3 is necessarily sapping some interest. But don't think that just because this message board is less active that all interest in SE IV has vanished.

Gold has many nice improvements, like drones. Many think it's worthwhile, but some are still using 'original' SE IV.

Go to seiv.pbw.cc and checkout PBW for yourself. It's been quite active and you can always find a game to join -- in either 'original' or 'Gold' SE IV.

Re: State of the game....

To be honest I was bored of SEIV basic, some of the little quirks that were in the game even after the final patch just bugged me (multi play who goes first at warp point, etc).

Gold rocks!! The AI does honestly seem smarter, it lands troops on planets!!! Drones are interesting. For modding the limit of stuff per ship seems to be much more adhered to (ie, make an engine armor as well, previously the AI would fill the ship with engines, as well as bases. Havn't seen that in gold yet). That and all the 'new' abilities that are being added (new mount options, units.txt file etc) and the promise of new 'toys' as well as bug fixes just means gold is that much better. (till se:Quad Wars comes out anyway)

Gold, just do it! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I think we will see another boost once MOO has been out for a few weeks.

I may be wrong but I have a bad feeling about the game right now. This isn't because they are competition, it's because the publisher doesn't have a great track history with hard core game titles.

But I would love to be proven wrong....

They have moved the forums from Delphi to their own site. This is Yet Another Disruption for the community that had formed at Delphi, after the sudden cascade of cuts in game features and the firing of a bunch of people including Alan Emrich.

Also, the new forum is cruddy. It seems to be a UBB type board like this one, but not well designed. AWFUL color scheme, bad screen layout. Yech... there was more whining about the BB than about anything else for the first week after the move.

Unless this game turns out to be the greatest 4X ever (erm, 5X? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) I think this whole affair is going to leave a 'sour taste' in the gaming communities. QSI is probably not gonna remember it fondly either.

"Deathstalker, what new toys ????? "

Well, to me the new Units.txt and Mount options (next patch) are new toys but there is also the rumor that once a few more game bugs are fixed there will be a patch adding new weapons/components. Kinda like the very first patch that added a few new weapons (been so long I forget which ones were added).

Deathstalker: New weapons and components using the abilities we have now (ie stuff we could have modded ourselves but now included in the "vanilla" game) or new components/ weapons with new abilities? (ie new toys for the modders to play with)

Re: State of the game....

I think they are taking a big risk with their marketing. Talk about your bad tastes BM. THey seem to be putting a lot of emphasis on this "fifth X" thingy, which really when you get down to it smacks of just hype. That could cause some backlash among even loyal fans.

I really think Malfador had the right idea releasing SEIV when it did. Even though it was a little rough, and maybe not quite ready, at least it was out there and being played. MOO has been in development so long they are getting to the point now that the anticipation so high there will be no way they can live up to the expectations.

Hey, maybe that is what the fifth X is. It's not Experience after all, it's Expectations. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

uhm...they fired Alan emrich http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

he was the lead designer, the game is fully designed now, only needs programming and tweaking, QS or IG had to let some people go, so they fired him.

back on topic...sort of:

They are mostly a Civ3 site but have forum devoted to several turn based strategy games. Including MOO3.

Re: State of the game....

Yes, we're trying to get MM to add some new weapon damage types and/or abilities. Dunno if he will actually do it or not. So don't take this as a promise.

Yes, Alan Emrich has been fired from the MOO III project. It is now completely 'in house' Quicksilver people who are working on it.

The Apolyton site has been a sort of 'rebel refugee' site since the turmoil began with feature cuts, moderator firings on the forums, and general axing of formerly popular staff on the development team. I suppose it's as good a place as any to visit for a sample of the atmosphere in the MOO fan community Online. But I should point out that there is some disappointment being voiced even by brand-new arrivals to the IG 'in houise' forums, too. People are beginning to hear about the changes -- like the axing of many original races -- and expressing their unhappiness. I hope this will lead IG to restore some of them in an expansion pack later on, but IG is not known for intelligence or sensitivity...

Henk, have you seen the color scheme on Infogrames site? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I agree with Richard, I think they will screw it up. I've been reading their bhah-blah. I think it will be another "Reach for the", (wallet, opps), I mean, "Stars.".

I, too, would be pleasantly surprized if it wasn't. I am not expecting too much, however.

Cynic, I am.

Re: State of the game....

Well, I can only repeat my observation from the Civ III thread. The first release of everything is a public beta. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I'm hearing more and more good comments about Civ III now that it has been patched a gazillion times. If they release on their announced schedule -- in time for this Christmas season, that is http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif -- MOO III will not be really 'done' until next summer, I'd say. And that's plenty of time for major changes. So if you hear a lot of *****ing in the initial reviews, don't completely close your mind to the possiblity it will become a good game later on. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Besides, once it's patched enough to be called "finished" (ie, mid summer), it will have dropped $10 or $20 in price! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
