Overwhelmed

What I hate most right now, aside from fearing that the info on this site might one day soon be gone, is trying to figure out the lay out for a mod that I have been thinking about for quite some time.

The details are killing me. I find it compellingly overwhelming to even think about undertaking the task of making a new mod. Sure I have a lot of great ideas as outlined in another forum, but ideas are one thing, actually making them into a mod is something else entirely.

I find it hard to grasp the simple concept of getting started. Where do I begin I ask myself. How do I put all the peaces together, what do I keep, what do I dicard, how will I get this to work, will any one be interested in it, is it a waste of time, etc.

Well I want to make the mod, more for myself than for others, so I guess I should just sit down one day and start working on it.

I wonder if a highly caffinated beverage would help?

Well, the first thing to do is decide what the core feature of your mod is.

Also, figure out if you want to edit the stock files as you go, or just start from scratch and copy bits out of the stock files as they become convenient.

Most of my mods have been done by the poke & edit method, but Carrier Battles was a from-scratch mod and only took a month to get running.

Just getting the core done will help immensely. You can add all your features later, but the core will give you *something*. Just having *something* to show progress makes all the difference in the world for motivation.

Is this that "naval" mod you started a thread about a month or so back? If so, I'm interested.

For starters, I'd suggest removing all ship sizes and components, and starting over from scratch - as SJ said - and using some book/internet sources of info about naval transportation and warfare. Once that is over, you've got an excellent start, and you can then proceed to the "poke-n-edit" mode using this basic template to poke at.

I always start with the tech areas.

Well now, with the announcement of SEIV Deluxe, looks like new life might be breathed into this five year old game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

You know you could just jot down some notes and stuff, and organize all of your ideas and thoughts, and save it for SEV...Maybe there are things you can only do in SEV for the mod that you couldn't do in SEIV...Also with any luck if there is an SEIV Deluxe...maybe that will be SEIV Gold 2.0....
