3D rendered graphics are 2D images created using 3D models and usually light-sourcing and other graphical effects. All the ships and components in SE4 are 3D rendered 2D images.

I couldn't agree more Knight. I must say that after seeing how well the rest of the game was done, I was kind of shocked to see how poorly the multiplayer functionality was handled. On the up side...
