Thanks. I need to take more time on each turn, so that I am expnading quickly, but even now I can keep up with one weak opponent easily enough.

I just want to build a serious empire and figure...

I tried choosing Ulm, which some had suggested for noob games. I wanted to play vs Mictlan for the same reason, and Mictlan is very weak. However, I play the first map, and get 3 AI players even...

FWIW I had only gotten to game changes, srolling terrain, and it locked up tight. I use WinXP on an AMD machine.
