Ring of Regeneration
Shield and Helm (cant remember names) that auto cast lightning in addition to commander's regular attacks.

I often throw some commanders a Rod of Authority to bump up their Leadership. A bow or casting item, as stated, also gives them something to do. Decorating an assassin with an assortment of items...

I have a lot of fun with the bless effects and lava warriors. Pick 3 paths that have interesting looking level 4 bless effects and after some normal expansion for the first 5 turns or so start...

Take all the provinces bordering my keep.

Take stock of dominion to determine direction of closest rival.

Look for any viable chokepoints.

At this point it depends on the size of the game....

Also make sure you have the latest update for whichever Video card you are using. I had some problems with a couple of games and updating the drivers solved the problems.
