A slow moving game can lose the players attention. Many times as in RL, science can be years ahead of actual technology. Making "Ideas" become "reality" takes time, not researching them.

Late game micromanagement tends to get repetitive and really starts to take away from game play. Having the AI handle some of it helps out quite a bit.
