Latest patch crashing

After installing the latest patch, I get a repeated "Can't create combat.temp file" or something like that -- and the game hangs. Anyone else experience this? What's the fix?

Well, that didn't work. I removed the old installation, reinstalled, and tried to run the patch. Same message. Any other ideas?

Forgive me if this is a known issue. I just tried patching to 1.84, and was told that my Version was detected as incorrect -- it needed to be 1.78 or some others. But my Version of SE IV Gold is...

Where is the manual on the CD? My CD only lists the setup, readme, icon, autorun files, and the demo folder. Am I missing something obvious here?
