It sounds like the text is already there, but hidden until you invoke it. Have you tried turning the map text off and on to see if that brings it back?

I don't have personal experience, but thermal sights can see through smoke, so if you are in a modern AFV up against an enemy without thermal imaging, you could pop smoke and shoot through the smoke....
