Are old games still playable with patch 1.20?

Before I install the latest patch for SE5, I needed to confirm if my old games would still be playable? I currently am playing Kwoks version 1.00 and am also looking at upgrading this to 1.01.

long range scanners

How do I get long range scanners to work? Even ships with a scan range of 5 dont seem to pick up activity on unocupied systems.
