Graphics bug with animation on?
I have strange results when I have ship animation between turns. I have several ships that when moved by AI at the beginning of a turn will not only be shown in the current object details window...

I had issues simialr and it was as simple as going into Control Panel in Win98 and setting the MIDI settings in Multimedia. It was set to an incorrect device. Hope this helps.
