Re: A Desperate Plea to MM for Better Mod Support

Great news. I just got an email back from Aaron at MM today on my mod suggestions here. I'm posting the text of the message below for everyone to see:

"You have excellent suggestions. We've been...

Re: Raising The Bar...

On the manual issue, I've suggested to MM that they turn their HTML manual into a right-click, context sensitive help file that can be accessed directly from the game.

The hard part is done, all...

Re: Raising The Bar...

Although I completely understand the points expressed in this topic, in fairness to MM I think you need to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Just reading and answering emails alone can be an all...

Re: SEIV as OPEN SOURCE?

The problem is that this isn't a good economic business model for a small company such as MM. They'd kill themselves IMO if they went the whole open source route.

However, many other games,...

Re: A Desperate Plea to MM for Better Mod Support

Jubala,

Yes, I did mail it off to MM today. Your suggestion does sound good too. They could just stick the name of the mod as identified in the mod header file into the savegame as another...

Re: A Desperate Plea to MM for Better Mod Support

Londo,

That may well be true but what about when the next MM patch comes out and you have to reinstall your changed files all over again?

This change wouldn't be that hard for MM to do and...

A Desperate Plea to MM for Better Mod Support

There's no doubt in my mind that SE4 is the most customizable game ever in the 4X genre. MM has very thoughtfully provided the data files for the game in a text format that is easily accessible by...

Re: Devastating RCE -- Please Help

My guess as a programmer is that there might be an upper limit of 255 ships per battle (possibly per player) and this is what's causing the range check error. Sounds like a subscript blew somewhere....

Re: Difference between PBEM and TCP/IP

The only way complex turn based games like SE4 ever work at all with TCP/IP is if the other players get to do something interesting during the other player's turns. Set waypoints, change ship's...

Re: Oh this is just sick and wrong

Breathes there a colonist with soul so dead, who never once to himself hath said, "this is my own, my native space".

Re: Oh this is just sick and wrong

"Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely".

Here we see yet another classic example of that hoary old maxim. Maybe you can sell the rights to your Empire's story and then Hollywood can...

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?

Right you are. This is the granddaddy of them all. One of the all time classic scifi series and one to which all games in this genre owe a large debt. I vote for a Lensman mod.

Republished in the...

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?

Am I the only one that remembers the Lensman series of science fiction books by E. E. "Doc" Smith?

Maybe I'm dating myself but these were tremendous books of the "Space Opera" genre, complete...

Re: Path Data File?

I think maybe we should contact him and try to explain it once again. I think a Quake style subdirectory structure would pay huge dividends for this game in the long run. it makes mods SO much easier...

Re: Path Data File?

Okay guys, thanks. That makes sense sense. too bad you can't just have a complete set of modified files running from another directory the way the Quake games do. That was how I was hoping it would...

Path Data File?

Can someone tell me how the path.txt file is used? If you open it up it says:

"This file must be located with the executable to tell it which directories to look in. If you make your own data...

Re: Should I buy it or wait till it\'s \"fixed\"

Get it.

I was playing MOO2 until quite recently, (watching it crash every time I had giant fleet combat) and bitterly reflecting that Stars! Supernova Genesis was likely the only true hope left...

Re: Combat Initiative...

Talenn,

I see the point. After thinking about it some more I think that we have to consider the 30 turns a "tactical combat round". In between these combat rounds, weaker ships that survive the...

Re: Combat Initiative...

Evan42,

I think that sounds like a balanced solution and would work. Wonder if MM ever tried that and, if so, why they didn't implement it.

Re: Combat Initiative...

Talenn,

You make some excellent points. I suppose one major difference between SE4 and MOO2 tactical combat is the 30 turn limit on tactical combat sessions in SE4. In effect I suppose this in...

Re: Combat Initiative...

Personally, I think the tactical combat is the weakest and most tedious part of SE4. The interface is kind of clunky though I may grow more used to it in time. I agree with the initiative comments...

Re: Strategy Guide? This game is awesome but needs one

Yes Virginia, this game badly needs a strategy guide of some kind. Badly.

Of course, the easiest thing to do would be for someone to go through all these informative Posts and cut and past the...

Re: Another pair of bugs from the beta-testers (us players)

I'm running my first game of SE4 and I ran into a Spatial Anomaly event that moved a defense base from my homeworld into another race's home system far away. It's how we made first contact (must...
