I don't recall any talk about 'tab to hide researchers' in dom3, but indeed it doesn't work in dom3. (And works in dom2, obviously).
I think its the change I hate the most between dom2 and dom3.

Yes, it is enabled. Furthermore, when you load a game that uses a mod, it automatically loads the correct mods for you, so there could be no doubt. (It also unloads none-relevant mods)

The reason pretenders get extra paths is because their default paths suck.
For example compare the Master Lich pretender (3 death) to the summoned Demilich (4 death). The Demilich even has better...

That's strange. If you choose NTJedi as your nation, then the battle results message reports that the both SCs died (but of course in the replay itself NTJedi's SC stays alive)

That's almost what I said - at most you have to check every unit number up to the highest one assigned so far, so there's no reason to go beyond that and reach all the way to the unit limit....

As a hobbyist programmer:
That sounds unlikely, why would you need to access a unit number for a unit that doesn't yet exist?
I could see how hosting times could get huge with a very high unit...
