Re: MBT's

I have heard recently experienced tank officers who have grave concerns about situational awareness in a crewed armoured vehicle that depends entirely on screens (ie, you cannot stick your head up...

Re: The Tank is dead

Interesting thoughts. I doubt too much will change v Third world and non State forces (at least until they can get their hands on more modern Chinese and Russian kit in the form of area SAMS, etc).

Note, however that, that figure includes reloads for tank smoke dischargers.
Actually, not.

Production was:

22,758,758 HE rounds for 2-in Mortar (not including tank mortar)...

Victory Hexes

This is a question for the gentlemen who run the game.

Is it possible to raise the possible value of Victory hexes above 250 to say 500?

I think the game, does not always put enough value on...

Re: game Preferences settings

Only thing I always change in WWII games is putting artillery up to 150%.

Re: Acceptable US Casualties Against 3rd World Armies

In some respects this is the most interesting speech at this Conference. He identifies a lot of common military thinking failures.

Worth noting...

Re: The Tank is dead

One further point on my last post. The gentleman speaking in the video, a former Royal Marine, suggested that area air denial could lead to even Western troops getting as little as 20% of expected...

Re: Acceptable US Casualties Against 3rd World Armies

VERY good series !
Yes much of it is good.
I've now watched all of it and it was, in my opinion, very uneven.

The Four British Staff College officers were, with the partial exception...

Re: The Tank is dead

In case I was not clear I believe the tank is very far from dead and was trying to make that point.

Below is a very interesting link from the recent UK Royal United Services Institute conference...

Re: Helo News game related.

Seems a bit galling when they have allowed Israel access to the code and helped IAI and Elbit to develop Israel's own electronic warfare, missile guidance systems and helmet mounted displays for the...

Re: British Paratroops in WWII

As an aside I seem to remember seeing a documentary film saying that a British Para officer won a Victoria Cross at Arnhem partly for knocking out a German tank while firing a 2 inch mortar from the...

Useful Channel on YouTube

The Military History Visualised YouTube channel mainly covers WWII (although it has a good deal of earlier stuff and some later stuff).

Pretty good source for WWII orbats of various types and...

Re: Helo News game related.

The most likely nation to have top level US kit with all bells and whistles is UK (and sometimes Israel)?

I know there are a lot of backroom negotiations going on regarding F35 and core computer...

Re: International Defence Green and White Papers

Would make a good deal of sense for India that has China as a major potential enemy, on the basis that 'my enemies enemy is my friend'.

Re: British Paratroops in WWII

I remember seeing a 2 inch mortar in the British Army c. 1980, as I recall (never did use one, I think it was an Armoury NCO showing it to me) it was pretty much just a tube and did indeed have a...

Re: Simulating Robotic Vehicles

Robotic Vehicles:
Vision generally very poor.
Situational awareness very close to zero.

To some degree this also applies to AFV totally reliant on cameras.

Yes there is a valid reason Tank...

Generally agree with the post above.

It is about combined arms.

The Tank is far from dead.

The Tank is dead

We have been hearing that the tank is dead for many years now...

ATGM, AT Helos, etc have killed the Tank as a threat.

So you have a very well trained Platoon or Company, say USMC or British...

Re: Jets & Planes but no UAV's here.

All this reminds me of the early 1960's, when, according to many experts, some of whom the British Government believed, we are told, missiles were going to make all manned aircraft obsolete. I think...

Re: Jets & Planes but no UAV's here.

The problem with the F-35 and ejection apparently comes from the massive weight of the VR helmet thingy the pilots have to wear. Undergoing rapid rocket acceleration that occurs with ejector seats,...

Re: Jets & Planes but no UAV's here.

Well yes and no. That was about technology seemingly overcoming physics and common sense: Missiles get more kills, more certainly, so who needs guns, except when you run out of missiles and/or the...

Re: Jets & Planes but no UAV's here.

I remember having heated discussions, getting on for ten years ago, on why UK should have gone cats and traps and F18 Super Hornet for the new carriers. That were always, supposedly, designed for...
