Re: Suppression: HMGs verses Artillery and Infantry

Also do not forget if you wanted real ammo loads, T-72 would get 30 rounds for the 12,7mm MG or so... ;)
This is worthy of another idea though - the .50 weapons usually have pretty low practical RoF...

Re: 106 RCL Jeeps tactics

That's where the combined arms part often comes to life. Ideally: Scouts spot the gun, start basic suppression if close enough. Their carrier (say scout jeep) adds some suppression, then 106mm adds...

Re: 106 RCL Jeeps tactics

OTOH the ATGM ones have the DISadvantages of being able to attack only armored targets and having low ammo load - there is nothing like a 106mm jeep wreaking havoc in enemy artillery lines ;)

Re: Mounted/Dismounted Reconnaissance on the Offense

If you are into recon, use transport to carry scouts in hidden terrain, then dismount them and slowly climb through the LOS block to have a look aroud.
If you are into recon-in-force, do the same,...

Re: 106 RCL Jeeps tactics

Also great to give muscle to light recce units - for "recon - in - force" on a small scale. If you manage to drive through the enemy first line that is.

Re: Reorganization of core during long campaign

See? Convert the "superfluous" panzers into infantry and you have your StuG and Infantry co. ;)

Re: Reorganization of core during long campaign

Why so complicated? Just replace first 3 units in first 3 platoons with what you want and convert the rest say into PzGrenadier support ;)

Re: Grenade Launchers

The veh. mounted GMGs were not worth much... Until they were given the "beaten zone" effect. That change made them into real mean lean fighting machines (until they encounter something heavy enough...

Re: USMC Helicopters' ammo in Vietnam

Unfortunately have no ammo values for various external mounts, but here are few doorgun etc. examples:
M23 mount (M60D doorgun, UH-1): 550 rounds
M24+M41 mounts (CH-47 doorgun + ramp): 200 rounds...

Re: US Stryker Brigade

To my knowledge they can fire Sabot, but the major HEAT loadout would most likely apply to their current deployment - few targets for APFSDSDU out there in the mudhuttistan.

Re: Merkava.

How many rounds are given up to give space for the stretchers?
And how gutted was that "showtime" Merkava?
And you have numbers. 2-3 fully loaded max., 1-2 usually.

Re: Merkava.

Pilots also train for ejecting the craft and evading enemy pursuit on the ground, though I guess they hope they will not have to do so IRL, same for lots of other drills and lots of other battlefield...

Re: Auto GL -- ammo loadout and crew

1 "shot" from AGL isn't 1 grenade (I seriously doubt one 30mm grenade would have the same "boom" as an 81mm mortar round ;)), same way as with autocannons.
And ccrew of 3 serves to give the mobility...

Re: Merkava.

Kevin, you yourself write, that the reason Merks were used as ad hoc APCs in 82 was that Israel had no heavy APCs back them. IOW emergency use and in pretty limited conditions - for example less need...

Re: Merkava.

A sad Merkava-related not:
Maj. General Israel Tal died today, a week before his 86th birthday.
May he rest in peace.

Re: spotting when turning around your units

I think that turning to the original sector again is not joined by another search chesk unless something happened in the meantime (rally event, fire event etc).

Re: spotting when turning around your units

There are still the problems you noted - I would say that neutral steer has the only advantage that you can turn on spot, but still you throw off your aim, kick up dust etc. - so still the enemy gets...

Re: spotting when turning around your units

RERomine: The T-34 turret traverse is for the usually broken electric system, right? ;)
As for the "One size fits all", treating hull turn as a movement would be OK IMO.

Bunker question

Is it possible to make a bunker proof against small arms fire? Or do I simply have to give the bunkers a larger crew to limit this? Noticed that from up close, from the heaviest protected side,...

Re: spotting when turning around your units

OTOH tanks which were photographed were usually not photographed in an ambush situation, but in a more "regular" combat, IOW not in a situation when seconds counted.
