I get such errors once in a while too, for various reasons, mostly because I tried to do something that was not allowed, or was not yet implemented, can't really give a fix, you'll have to figure it...

Well, the effects I tried so far did not accept negative values, I tried to make an engine, that would speed up that character, but couldn't get it to work...

also, if you assign your side/aft firing weapons to a different weapon slot, you can see if it can fire or not and thus you know if it is on your side or not...

A little bug I noticed : if you pick up an item in the spacedock (cursor changes into that item) and then just press 'close', the cursor will still have that item.
