Re: Growing concern - but optimistic

A lot of people have posted a lot of negative sentiments that were way out of proportion to the actual problems, and as I predicted would happen a couple of times on this board, people were starting...

Re: SEV DEMO IS OUT!

Like I said, tastes and preferences. I've made my case and you've made yours. Fence sitters who are reading will have been convinced by one side or the other by this point.

Re: SEV DEMO IS OUT!

I meant that a greater percentage of the mods out there would be acceptably balanced. People who are good at balancing will obviously produce well-balanced mods, and it's understandable to say "well,...

Well, I suppose we're arguing tastes and preferences now. I also prefer oranges to apples, and anyone who disagrees is flat out wrong http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: SE:V AI Diplomacy Observations

One problem I've noticed with AI diplomacy is that when they ask for assistance, they don't tell you who you're supposed to be assisting them against and in what system they're being attacked, so it...

Re: SEV Tactical Combat Impressions

Preaching to the choir, buddy. Got a copy of Carrier Battles on my hard drive. Excellent mod, by the way. Kudos. Can't wait to see how you bring it to SE5.

Re: SEV DEMO IS OUT!

Some SE4 mods are well balanced, but the majority aren't. It's easier to visualize balance for people who aren't great at it when you have a smaller range of options to consider. That's why I feel it...

Re: SEV DEMO IS OUT!

Such lists as you describe would be an attempt to force a square peg into a round hole, to "sliderize" the new system, which I feel is a mistake. There should be only two or three options at most for...

Re: SEV Tactical Combat Impressions

Whenever you switch to something new, there will always be people who liked the old way better, but I maintain that the turn based combat of SE4 was absolutely horrible compared to this new system we...

Re: SEV DEMO IS OUT!

Personally, I think people are mostly bemoaning the lack of the sliders simply because they were used to them. The current system may be just as unbalanced and crappy, but it is at least...

Re: SEV question - new design tech levels?

One thing I've noticed is that cost does not increase with each level nearly as much as it did in SE4, so there's a lot less reason to want older, cheaper components. I think people are mostly upset...

Re: SEV DEMO IS OUT!

The drawbacks that you speak of are not really drawbacks at all, compared to what you can buy with them. -5% organic and intel for +25% construction, as an example. But eventually you run out of...

Re: SEV DEMO IS OUT!

Yes, you can easily game the system and get 1,000 starting points with basically no drawbacks, but you're ignoring opportunity cost. Those thousand points could have been used for a lot of other...

Re: SE5 Demo Bug Reports

I seem to be the only one in the world who is uncautiously optimistic. Sure, the game's got some serious flaws and rough edges, but so did SE4, and the improvments to the combat system and modability...

Re: SE5 Demo Bug Reports

You almost have to restrict the incoming treaties the AI will accept if you don't improve the AI. Otherwise, it would be trivially easy to get them to agree to treaties that are extremely harmful for...

Re: SEV DEMO IS OUT!

Yes but you can fit 2 Meson Blasters for every Kinetic and they cost 1,000 starting points, so I still give the nod to Mesons.

Re: SE5 Demo Bug Reports

What's the point of the new diplomacy options if the AI has no idea what it's asking for, and suggests treaties that are all over the map, and treaties which may greatly harm them? The ideal solution...

Re: SEV DEMO IS OUT!

If you look more closely, you'll find that even the APB is inferior to the Meson Blaster, which has the same damage and range, but is smaller and uses less supply. Also, the Meson Blaster version of...

Re: SE5 Demo Bug Reports

On treaties, I like the new options, but the AI doesn't seem to have any understanding of them at all. Perhaps there should be a number of set "packages" of options, and those are the only ones the...

Bugs
1. In the initial research screen, you can deselect all of the initial technologies for a massive headstart, and then still have the technologies you deselected when the game starts. Talk about...

Re: Star Wars Mod - II (Sci-Fi Xover Mod)

Some of the sizes for SW ships are off.

1. Nebulon B frigate is 500 meters.
2. Executor SSD is 17,600 meters.
3. Not sure where you got fighter sizes, but I'm pretty sure TIE Bombers are bigger...

Re: Star Wars Mod - II (Sci-Fi Xover Mod)

I was thinking more along the lines of controlling techs with free traits, and you just have to make sure no one takes more than one general and one specific.
