The problem with AIs is that (usually) they do the same thing every time. Even if you randomize strategies at the start of a game, once you figure out which AI enemies are using which strategy...

For binary systems, the game could allow travel from one sector to the other without warping. Of course, in that case, if one star went nova it would need to wipe out BOTH systems.
