One thing that i like to see, is a weapons system like the one used in Starships Unlimited, Missiles use ammo and PPB / shields use energy.
For energy you need engines and reactors.
Also the arcs...

AI must have a history of relations and evolve based in that, because is stupid to offer a treaty one turn...

For me, the best combination is the probability of sweep and various types of mines.
Right now, the mines only do standard damage.
I'm thinking about mines that destroy engines, shield generators...

Ok,

Upgrading 1.67 to 1.78 and TDM 3.11 to 3.20.
Old games work ok.

Also, in a real long game, after exausting all possible research, the AI don't scrap the research/computer facilities.
