Re: SEV: Are there missing ship types?

Be nice if you could transfer them, and they had their own experience too. Basically nested fleets.

Re: Proposed Damage System Overhaul

Are shields & armor at all dirrectional in SE5?

If not, what might get close to what I want would be to limit ships to one each but have "mounts" that can be used to put heavier armor/shielding on...

Re: SE5: WP transit order and mine deploying?

I saw pretty weird behavior with mines myself. I'm not remembering the exact numbers but it went something like this.... I built a mine laying ship with something like 12 mine laying components and...

Re: Proposed Damage System Overhaul

Yes, emissive is pretty close to the idea except I'd want shields to work that way, too. Also there should be a limit by hull size on how much you can pile on. I'm really wanting to set up a...

Re: Proposed Damage System Overhaul

I don't really see energy weapons of different strength as getting reduced by the same percentage by the same defense strength. I still see it as a more powerful weapon loosing a lower percentage of...

Re: Proposed Damage System Overhaul

Not sure I get the percentage thing on penetration/damage absorbtion. A layer of sheet metal from a car door will stop a much larger percentage of the total damage from a .25 auto pistol bullet than...

Re: SEV: Are there missing ship types?

To add to Suicide Junkie's comment, retrofit is the mechanism by which one takes advantage of a hull size increase in SEV. If you do an "upgrade" on an existing design, and new levels of hull...

Re: Growing concern - but optimistic

But exploration gives you a legitimate claim on it! You know, the old plant the flag and "I claim this land for the King of Bling" routine?

As currently programmed, the net in-game effect is that...

Re: SEV: Are there missing ship types?

Possibly more to the point, the Italian Conte di Cavour class battleships. They were built during WWI, and radically rebuilt during the late 1930's. Displacement increased roughly 25%. Only the...

Re: Militia and troops.

Although the Japanese talked about doing that and even made some preparations for it (women training with improvised spears & such), they did not not actually do it when crunch time came. Neither...

Re: SE:V, I\'ll be honest

I played it, too. You are right - it wasn't really a computer SFB but a computer game based on SFB material - because of the RTS combat. It kind of illustrates the point I'm trying to make, though....

Re: Militia and troops.

More to the point, they are examples in which the alien intent is to exterminate the human race, not simply rule them. What is going on in SE is typically conquer & rule - if you want to exterminate...

Re: Militia and troops.

Right - my bad.

However, here is more about my point...

The maximum population of a large world (i.e. default player homeworld) is 4000M. Given that the Earth currently holds roughly 6...

Re: Militia and troops.

Did the entire population of every country invaded by Germany in WWII turn out in mass to face the German army in open battle with whatever they could scrape up? What's the difference in getting...

Re: SE:V, I\'ll be honest

Another issue that goes away in a computer implimentation, since the "rules" are the program code and can't be lawyered.

Re: SE:V, I\'ll be honest

With the computer doing the record-keeping, a lot of the complexity goes out the window. The "Move to" order in SEV tactical is conceptually identical to how pre-plotting would be done.

Re: SE:V, I\'ll be honest

Agreed. As the resolution of the grid gets greater and the time increment represented by an impulse gets shorter, you arrive at "real-time".

I don't know about that. Too many people have been...

Re: SE:V, I\'ll be honest

I wouldn't want to do that in 3D or 2D, real-time or turn-based. Playability with that many ships in a battle mandates giving orders by multi-ship formation to reduce the number "units" the player...

Re: SEV suggestions/gripes

I don't like it either, but it is consistent with SEIV. In other words, in SEIV troops were presented like vehicles, and SEV has just added a tactical resolution to it.

I used to mull over the...

Re: SE:V, I\'ll be honest

Why couldn't they occupy the same square? They can in board games like Starfire & Starfleet Battles? It's called "stacking". It happens on the system map now (and in SEIV and in SEIII). The above...

Re: SE:V, I\'ll be honest

I wouldn't call it greed. It is a matter of (1) the investment in training time and expense to produce a cardiovascular surgeon is a whole lot higher than that to produce a lawnmower-pusher and (2)...

Re: Militia and troops.

I'm not sure that it's unrealistic if militia are "free". If you had to pay ongoing maintenence on them and the number you got was proportional to both the population size and how much you'd been...

Re: SE:V, I\'ll be honest

I can't honestly address MOO3, because I never got far enough into my first & only game of it to get even a little bit up the learning curve. I was a regular on the on the forum during its...
